Re: Ben Boland

BOLAND - Ben, 89, Delray Beach, FL died March 25, 1999. Beth Israel Memorial Chapel.

And that, friends, is a minor tragedy. One of the most important writers on the game gets a one line obit. The June 1999 ACF Bulletin gave him 1 line as well. No details.

Re: Ben Boland

And yet, I can't find an obituary anywhere - I may have missed one in the Bulletin, but Jim Loy doesn't know either. Ben seems immortal but 110 years is a stretch. Does anyone know?

Re: Hometown Weekly did a nice article on checkers

This newspaper group has given us some solid articles with good photos, over the last 20 years. June's a slow news month and if there's been some turnover in the newsroom, some newbie might get the assignment for the "wouldja look at this?" story. Always worth a shot.

Anyone having problems getting the bulletin?

I've been going through the wreckage of our recent move and have nothing after December 2017. no emails, no snail mail. And I think I'm paid up through the end of 2019.

I met him in Glasgow years ago and we toured various gravesites and other checkers-related places. A real gentleman.

Checkers fonts

I used to have Edinburgh installed - MS Word font, Alpine Electronics. It looks like they're long gone as is my font. What do you use to produce checker diagrams? There used to be freeware around but my google-fu is weak.

Thanks.

Re: New England Checkers - newspaper article

George - I don't know where Glenn came up with the name Iron Cross - it was a regular 11-15 23-18 8-11 27-23 4-8 etc game. Perhaps some Maine nomenclature I'm unfamiliar with.

Re: Iser Kuperman memorabilia seeks home

I believe that Ina would like this material housed somewhere that would make it available to the public on request. I'll confirm that with her, but do you know if Nick can support that kind of arrangement?

Thank you.

Iser Kuperman memorabilia seeks home

I have Iser's inscribed 10x10 commemorative board from his championship match, and his widow Ina has a lot of other important items from his career. We don't really have a suitable place for them here in the Boston area, and Joe Margolin and I are looking for ideas as to where they might best be hou...

Re: Would they have made the same mistakes with checkers?

It's a nice problem. Ryan's text: Black: 2, 6, 7, 10 White: 9, 11, 13, 16 Black to play and draw In 1931 the Newell-Emmett Co. of New York City, advertising representatives for the Liggett-Myers Tobacco Co., featured problem No. 31 in a series of nationally distributed lithographs for billboards, to...
