Re: My new Youtube Channel from Beginners to others!
Love the channel! I was wondering if you plan to enable comments at some point. Also wondering if you have ever thought about doing a video on John McGill, how he mentored you, and maybe some of his most notable games.

I have seen it attributed to William Gladstone more than once.

J.H. Bruce (1876-1939), President of the English Draughts Association
J. H. Bruce (1876-1939) was president of the EDA from 1923 to 1926. In 1926, he unexpectedly became secretary of the EDA upon the sudden resignation of Arthur A. Ashworth over the question of who would have the privilege of travelling to New York to serve as referee for the International Match. Bruc...

Re: John F. Horr obituary (New York Times, 10 May 1935)
I didn't realize that Horr walked out on the 1922 tourney! I know he was missing his right hand due to a childhood hunting accident. And of course there's the famous story about when Jordan dragged out an end game until Horr blundered. I always wonder what happened to these guys' manuscripts, notes,...

Re: Interesting quote about Alfred Jordan by D.G. McKelvie
Reading more of McKelvie's articles in the Draughts Review, I think his comment on Artful Alf was less malicious than it appeared at first. Still, no player could have compiled Alf's record in tournament and match play against literally all the greatest draughts players on both sides of the Atlantic...

Re: Interesting quote about Alfred Jordan by D.G. McKelvie
Alfred Jordan was a great draughts promoter, and was world champion from 1912-1917 according to the WCDF and ACF. Edward Winter in his Chess Notes has 10756. Emanuel Lasker and draughts/checkers , where Alfred Jordan plays Emanuel Lasker checkers. Scrolling down from the link should get to the game...

Interesting quote about Alfred Jordan by D.G. McKelvie
From the Draughts Review, just after Jordan's death in 1926: "Jordan was not a player of exceptionally swift perception in an unknown position, nor was he a deep and sure analyst, but he spent, utilized, or wasted--just as you view it--more time on the game than any man I have ever known. He ha...

An excellent account of Henry Christie's victory in the 1891 English Championship Tourney
This is a superb article on Christie's defeat of Alfred Jordan and William Beattie in the final round of the 1891 English championship. The article notes that Christie was a child prodigy at draughts, winning his first match at the age of 7 from a man named Brown from South Shields. It's interesting...

Re: Why did the Center opening become obsolete?
Hi George: Thanks for your reply. Yes, 15-18 is the key move for the Center, as 11-16 is for the Glasgow. Chernev mentions that, like Dick Jordan, James Moir was partial to it. Liam Stephens told me he thinks it faded in popularity due to a lack of winning options for Black. I enjoyed the game you s...

Excellent documentary about Ton Sijbrands
Mostly in Dutch, but large parts of it are in English. Some fascinating information about Andris Andreiko (including pictures of the crime scene after his murder, and of his funeral in Riga), whose widow Sijbrands visits. I didn't realize what an impact Andreiko's murder had on Sijbrands. https://ww...
