Win in 193 from a 6x6

http://www.onlyperfectcheckers.com/images/win_in_193.jpg One of the cool things about probing the Perfect Play databases in RAM (rather than just off of the disk like WCC Platinum III) is that if you let it search long enough, it can announce a win in 193 plies from this position where white played...

Re: A position a human can solve that the 10-piece can't

Yes - this is our (humans) privelegy  not available for programs ! Well, not entirely true either. I recently wrote a new move generator that uses 35-bits, not 32-bits, and it is twice as fast on a 64-bit machine than under 32-bit hardware. Now you might say why do you need 35-bits on a board ...

What good is the proof?

Don't you guys remember the space program? How many people said "Why are we spending all of this money trying to go to the moon?" Many technologies precipitated out of the research that went into the space program. Now, some of the pundits are quick to quip: "Yeah, like Tang, the astr...

A position a human can solve that the 10-piece can't

Computer programs are tactically superior, no doubt. But humans are strategically superior. Grandmaster Savielly Tartakower had a great quote: "Tactics is what you do when there is something to do. Strategy is what you do when there is nothing to do." Take a look at this position: white ch...

One of my quotes...

http://www.nature.com/news/2007/070716/ ... 16-13.html

I said it was no big deal to the checkers players who enjoy the game. After all, people continued to run for sport after the invention of the automobile.

Setting Reporters Straight

I had numerous conversations with reporters also. It seems they care more about meeting their deadline than getting very detail-oriented. One reporter said something like this to me: "So there are about 144 different ways to put the checkers on the board without a capture, right? 12 for one sid...

Re: From Earl Hangen's Scrapbook....

I remember some conversations with Don Lafferty where he admired how Dick Fortman could retrieve a position from "any game ever played" in about 5 minutes. Don would say something like: "I'd call Dick on the phone and give him the runup. And, my oh my, good ole' Dick would be able to ...

Marion Tinsley was quoted as having said about 10% of them are probably losses.

Re: 11-man ballot

I was writing Mecir, the Gold Token programmer, and we discussed 11-man ballot. I conclude he will need two things to program it in GT. First is an exact description. Second a compendium (preferably as an electronic file) of the allowable openings. The reason for the second is that in 11-man ballot...

An Example of Positions Computers Cannot Play Optimally

More than one reader of Bob Newell's website has sent me emails regarding the "Perfect Play" databases, and why I think probing them in RAM (rather than just reading them off of disk as WCC Platinum III does now) is so important. I have found a recent example from an over-the-board game th...

Re: Ryan Pronks Annoying Message

Alex, If you want a true comparison: 1. I can jack my Mustang up high enough for you to crawl under. 2. I can kick the jack out and simulate how the car fell on me. 3. I'll give you the same care, 6 months in traction after an emergency surgery. 4. Two months later, after you played absolutely no ch...

Ryan Pronks Annoying Message

Does anyone know someone named Ryan Pronk? It is about 8:45 here Thursday morning, and someone using that night contacted me via AIM and challenged me to play checkers (some people have jobs) then called me a "proggy", whatever that is. Does anyone know why certain checkers players have th...
