Re: Chess and Checker Club of New York
Mr. Pask, Reference your question "did Bobby Fischer ever frequent the club!" (i.e, The New York Chess and Checker Club ): Chess GM Andrew Soltis in his excellent book Bobby Fischer Rediscovered (2003), has this to say in his superb (and quite brief) introduction: "I witnessed Fischer...

For its seeming simplicity and its actual complexity and beauty; it is the soccer of the mind.

Richard and George and All,
Also Edward Lasker who, in addition to Checkers and Chess, also wrote about and played Go, as did the better known Emanuel.
There you have it,

Excellent article, JR! Thanks for posting (and for all the other "above and beyond" things you do for checkers).
Always a pleasure to read your posts.

Re: Checkers book
Willie Ryan quoting the great Tom Wiswell in The Modern Encyclopedia of Checkers , page 203, for the edification of all: Don't "can" the Huff---Huff if you can! And old Tommie knew a thing or two about checkers, eh?? V/R, Jaguar72/Gary

Re: Checkers book
Greetings to all, FYI, Willie Ryan, in what I think was his final book, The Modern Encyclopedia of Checkers (copyright 1940 and 1943 William F. Ryan), in the section entitled The Standard Laws presents cogent, well reasoned, and (being Willie Ryan) quite entertaining comments against the abolition o...

Re: Seventh and Final Volume of 21st Century Checkers
Dear Mr. Newell, 800 pages? $30 to $35?? That makes the price per page so low I would have to buy it... . Even though my house is already groaning under the collective weight of checkers and chess books, what could one more possibly hurt? Nothing. Put me in the "yes" column. Thanks!! Regar...

Re: New article on computers attempting to solve checkers
Dr. Beckwith and all, While doing nothing to resolve the "Is checkers really 'solved'?" debate, this quote from an article, The Secret Handshake by chess GM Andy Soltis that appeared in the January 2016 issue of Chess Life magazine is, perhaps, germane for a couple of reasons. The main thr...

Fins de Partie aux Dames
And now for something completely different. In one of the many excellent book shops in the French Quarter in New Orleans last year I came across this book: Fins de Partie aux Dames ("Checker Game Endings", more or less...) by Henri Tranquille and Gerard Lefebvre. It is all in French (altho...

Re: more vids about checkers on youtube
These are excellent videos, George. Exactly what is needed to promote the game to the general public in a very civilized manner. I think they give, in a rather laid back and very attractive format, a dramatic idea of the excitement, complexity and serenity (yes, serenity...) of the game. I hope ther...

Re: Any good checkers out there?
Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could get some regular size marble checker pieces for the 18 by 18 inch board, which is the official size. I am not sure what the diameter is for the official size checker piece, but the ones I bought off this website are about 1 1/4 t...

Re: Link to movie "THE CHECKER KING"
Pal Bucker, the Number 1 Good Guy on this Forum, called me and requested I move the following comments on The Checker King movie, which I originally posted a few days ago on the Al Darrow in Rehab thread, to this thread and I was more than happy to do so. I'll say again, If you haven't yet taken a l...

Fair enough, John. I'm through.
But it's hardly "continued finger-wagging". Accusation of wrongdoing on a public forum is a serious issue and it will eventually need resolution, which, I think, is all anybody is asking.
