Weak Position with a Strong Move for Checkers
Re: Weak Position with a Strong Move for Checkers
Alan...not only did you not respond to the young player's direct question to you, you chose not to respond to me. Yet you respond to Bernard Coll who i considered in this thread to be most provoking. Well this is not what I want to see from the ACF officials and is why I no longer financially support the ACF. I have attended many tourns over the years but will no longer because of the way ACF treats youth and women. Your position of not responding is working for you personally but as everyone can see....ACF is dwindling so maby a change of position might be worth a perhaps small bit of consideration. Please do not respond to me on this as your actions have already been quite effective. I can only hope more people like Gene Ellision and John Acker and the few other young people endure and emerge, a new and better ACF.
Sportsmanship is more important than a win any day Better to be known for word and honor than a win
Re: Weak Position with a Strong Move for Checkers
Hi Ted, Well the best way to look at it is like this. You cant make everyone happy its imposible one way you side is going to anger the other side. Same as past presidents any kind of official or person's in charge. As far as not answering perhaps the members should of tried a personal letter which Alan always answers. But to say ACF does not support women or youth enough is false. ACF made bad decisions that angered alot of people some including me. But its life nothing personal so relax suck it up a bit. Billy

Re: Weak Position with a Strong Move for Checkers
Billy, I thoroughly enjoy your “suck it up” solution! Most people just whine about a problem and do not realize how much joy you can get from this so called problem. For instance, if your roof is leaking, most will try to fix it. I say “suck it up!” That leak can just become a free shower, or fun entertainment for the kids. Fixing problems is ridiculous when you can just suck it up.
It has come to my attention that my username has been used by others; they have abused it and besmirched my name. I apologize to all of those who view me in a negative light because of posts that may have been offensive or vacuous.

Help Needed with Basic Checkers reprint
by chipschap on Wed May 05, 2010 8:14 pm
I am working on a newly typeset edition of all seven parts of Basic Checkers which we (John Acker and I) wish to have available in book form (paper, not ebook) in time for the memorial tournament. I am quite far behind but now working several hours a day on this, bugging my poor old eyes out staring at the screen and keyboard.
The intent is to sell the book at a price which recovers cost and donate anything more to youth checkers; this is a non-profit exercise.
I do need some limited help with checking some questionable passages. If you own a printed copy of Basic Checkers and able to work with word processing software, and are willing to donate perhaps 10 hours of your time between mid-May and mid-June checking some pages of copy, all in return for just an acknowledgement(!), please let me know as soon as you can: bobnewell@bobnewell.net.
You would be helping with an effort that will hopefully honor RLF's memory by putting a classic back into circulation, and perhaps put a few dollars into the youth fund.
Thanks!

Tommy, a single reprint copy (hopefully all 7 parts?) would be what I need the most. I am working on a newly typeset version. Could you please email me at bobnewell@bobnewell.net so I can arrange to get a copy from you as soon as possible? I will reimburse your costs. Thanks!

Is this from the same source as the on-line version at
clara.davey.net? I made some use of that but there are many scanning
errors, which is the same problem I have here. And in the move to
Honolulu many books were misplaced. So I don't have a printed copy of
the original to compare with.
What I'm looking for is a print or scan of the original book(s).
However your electronic copy might be cleaner than mine. Under what
terms would you be willing to let me use all of it?
Many thanks,

Thanks for the good wishes, Tommy. I'm working several hours a day on
this as I let myself get too far behind. My last year at work, prior
to retirement in February, was very hard indeed with a total of 20
weeks away.
We moved to Honolulu immediately after retiring. Now that we are here full-time we are very happy with it. The
weather is beautiful; it's always summer. We are only a block away
from the beach (about a five minute walk),
and the relatively slow pace of life that you find in the tropics. there
are many nice coffee shops where I can spend a few hours with my
laptop and drink the excellent Hawaiian coffee.

AN EDITED VERSION OF ACKERS THREAT OF LEGAL ACTION BELOW....................August 8, 2010
Dear Mr. Canning and Mr. Newell:
I understand that Mr. Canning has demanded an electronic copy of the Basic Checkers reissue in exchange for having lent his electronic copy (which made no substantive contributions to the reprint) to Mr. Newell during the early stages of the project. As I am the legal owner of the reissue and its sole distributor, I must ask you to cease and desist from those demands.
The Basic Checkers reissue project was conceptualized and completed to benefit youth checkers in the United States, and Richard Fortman's relatives agreed to the reprint solely on those terms. To distribute the PDF or other source files anywhere else would be to violate the terms of that legal agreement, and to alienate a valuable ally to checkers and to the ACF.
Accordingly, I am officially voiding the agreement between the two of you regarding the promised electronic copy, both because it was made before Mr. Newell relinquished ownership to me and because to distribute the project source files would explicitly violate the legal terms of the contracts and agreements involved, both with the Fortman family and with CreateSpace. Mr. Newell, should you choose to move forward with this exchange, let me state for the record that I will take legal action to protect and enforce my legal rights to the book, and to maintain the integrity of the project.
John Acker
WELL THERE IT IS IN BLACK AND WHITE, FORUM MEMBERS CAN MAKE THEIR OWN MIND UP...............
So this is the thanks i got for doing the DREAM YOUNG a good turn.Im utterly disgusted having been treated in this way by CO-MEMBERS in the ACF. All i can say is my FAITH IN HUMANITY has been shattered by these two so called DO-GOODERS and if this is the company im keeping in the ACF then its time i withdrew my membership.
As far as i can see Bob Newell in a double crosser and not a MAN OF HIS WORD........and John Acker has fooled us all and that includes the PONDER /FORTMAN families and now CLAIMS "OWNERSHIP OF BASIC CHECKERS" and acting on behalf of the ACF to do it..............
Its enough to make Richard Fortman to make turn in his grave RIP..

Without offering any opinion on the validity of the subject matter...Tommy, you probably should have started a new thread with this......

Re: Weak Position with a Strong Move for Checkers
I said I was done posting... but this is just too much fun..
It's okay Tommy
I have basic checkers in PDN and every single game will be on my website for everyone to see... don't waste your time.
I also have TONS of other books and every single book I can get my hands on will be on my website for everyone to look at for free (The Games Parts)
can't copyright a checkers game... only the commentary. GG
P.S if anyone has PDN copies of any books and you think I may not already have it... email me at boredgames.net@gmail.com and I will add you as a contributor
Thank you,

Jay Bailey, You silly goose if your roof is leaking stick a pot under neath and then get it fixed. I dont think not getting your way on a topic or approval on something is worth crying over is what I meant about sucking it up. Example I give a idea to my supervisor he might not go with my idea but I wont hate him for it or dwell on it. Your trying to put house repairs or major problems into my content of topic. Billy

It seems the WORD of a man or woman doesn't mean anything these times...Tommy is right! In old times the WORD given was something about honor, in these times we need papers signed to do whatever? I think Bob Newel couldn't keep his WORD because John Acker... he even says it was not usefull, even if it wasn't he must be gratefull for his good willing of helping "American youth", come on people, what is going on?
TO ALAN MILHONE
Alan, you wont get tired of WARNNING?, WHY U DON'T JUST ACT???? The "kid" Josh is always rude and saying bad words in the forum, he even laughed of you....he said: oops in your face...come on Alan, ACT

Irma, he is very reponsible, polite and intelligent young adult. I always enjoy his sarcastic posts. Unfortunately not everyone has enough sense of humor to understand his posts.Irma Sierra wrote:The "kid" Josh is always rude and saying bad words in the forum

Alex, I agree with Irma, Josh insults at will, anybody who disagrees with his posts,in the full knowledge that the moderators of the ACF are not going to actually delete anybody within the (INSULT with IMPUNITY) clique within the ACF. I also include YOU within that clique. As for being the World Champion (on Merit), one would have expected you to conduct yourself in a more professional manner. I know it is hypothetical, but I cannot for one moment believe that (IF) Marion Tinsley, Asa Long and Walter Hellman, had the internet and keyboards at their disposal in their day, that they would have lowered themselves to your standard of posting! They would not have dragged the reputations of their fellow checker players (regardless of playing ability) through the mud and grime which you seem to wallow in.

Re: Weak Position with a Strong Move for Checkers
Agreed Tommy, Alex could be just "winding up" , but he has left a trail of disgruntled ACF viewers in his wake. It is not acceptable in my opinion that any individual insults and derides another poster habitually and then uses the defence it was only a "wind up". The juveniles see Alex as a role model, hence the unworthy postings from them also!tommyc wrote:Jes Bernard.......... thats "way over the top" you are too sore on poor ol Alex..........where is yur Celtic sense of humor man.........dont yu know hes just"WINDING YU UP" .as for Josh youve goota excuse him hes "just a kid" fighting to be heard, like a baby a bottle time LOL

Re: Weak Position with a Strong Move for Checkers
Dear Mr. Coll:
40 years ago in my first Checker lifetime I knew Dr. Tinsley very well and also knew his Mother , Viola . Marion was soft spoken , polite, considerate, etc. He would have never used the computer or this forum for anything but the promotion of the game he loved .
I never got to meet Hellman nor Long but am sure both would have been true champions and consumate gemtleman and would have posted games, give nsound advice to all classes of players and never have used the forum in a negative way.
Also, yes I can delete at will forum users. But ............. If I do this, few will be left
Does another want to moderate in a fair and objective way ?? Would that person delete users equally with no axe to grind ?? Many of you make it sound soooooooooooooo easy to moderate an open forum and walk the thin line of free expression and then to delete negative posts. If so and so were deleted, many would cry FOUL .
Sincerely:
Alan Millhone, President

I agree with your comments Alan, I do not envy your position as ACF moderator. I know that I would not be "up to it"Alan Millhone wrote:Dear Mr. Coll:
