There are, of course, free checker books at the Checker Maven (under "downloads"): http://www.bobnewell.net/nucleus/checkers.php. Several of these are classics.

There are a few free checker books at http://www.archive.org/. Search for both "checkers" and "draughts."

Also, try: http://openlibrary.org/. Apparently, none of these can be downloaded, but must be borrowed (or maybe bought). They will list the public libraries where the book can be found, starting with the library closest to you. It may cost some money to borrow.

I haven't seen any checker books at Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page.

Just Edward Lasker's book at http://manybooks.net/.

http://www.amazon.com/ has become the best place to buy old used books (from their many sellers). Search for "checkers draughts." Occasionally the descriptions will be inadequate or the title will be wrong, like "Millard Hopper the Checker King" instead of "Checkers" by Millard Hopper. And rarely the price will be astronomical.

Note that all of the Kaplan books are about pool checkers.
