update on my schools

Post by kim willis »

I just wanted everyone to know what is happening in my area on me teaching kids to play checkers.

I have been invited to go to a open career day at our Middle school. This will be may 6th from 8:30am to 3:00pm. There has been invited all schools from this area to come. So I will have excess to every school and their students threwout this day. I am very excited about this for I will be talking about our game of Checkers and where I have traveled and also set up boards and checkers to play whoever wants to play me. This is a open chance for me to get more schools involved.

I hope to have some kind of media there so I can share this with you all.

Next is traveling to St. Anna California to a non-profit organization called RoyalFamilyKids. I was contacted by a organizer who told me that this organization help children who were abused, neglected. They help these kids to growth and help with self esteem. They have camps all over the United States and called me and asked if I would help them place checkers in their camps. I spoke to this woman over an hour. So I told her I would help her. Now I am just waiting to hear from her and then I will be traveling to speak to volunteers on how they can teach this game to these kids.

Next but not last is finishing my childrens book which I have been working on for 5 yrs. Now I have someone to do my drawings and cover,,, which I have to say is Alans wife.

For me this is becoming overwhelming but it is a joy to see this happening.

Never Let you Dream die :)

Hello Kim:

What you need is a corporate sponsor . Anyone have any marketing expertise in this area ??

McDonald's or Chick-Fil-A for example have kid's meals and a Checker series would fit in nicely . I told Kim she needs a ' powerpoint' presentation of herself and what Checkers offers . The China mind sports needs to be included in her presentation to any potential sponsor and the reasons why they need to hook up with her and the ACF. " Youth " is a key word to incorporate into anything she presents.

Contact Kim with any ideas or if any of you have any connections with a corporate enity.

Her children's book will be fabulous when completed and published and will raise awareness.

Sincerely:

Coach Kim, thank you for this update. I look forward to your book in the ACF Store. There has been some concern expressed on this forum about culture and different forms of checkers. But
ACF checkers is the original form of checkers, and the simplest. Once learning the fundamentals of ACF checkers, and having fun playing, kids are well equipped to move on to other forms of checkers or even chess. Chess rules are not so universal anymore, with 10x10 Grand Chess, etc. Equipment wise, checkers is the ideal game, as the board is simple and all game pieces are interchangeable; you can't do that with chess! There does seem to be a strong connexion between checkers and math, starting with Dr. Tinsley. Checkers is a mind sport second to none in learning problem solving skills.
With checkers, kids learn skills that will last a lifetime. --George Hay
