Missing and interesting opportunities in San Remo, Rd. 5-6

Post by Alex_Moiseyev »

With round 5 the tournament passed median and went into second half. Players started getting more tired. In additon - some players lost chances and for leaders it was more pressure. Combination of all these factors generated more exciting missings which I am glad to share with you now.

=========================================================================================================

Round 5.

#1. Rd.5, G1. C. Ciampi vs G. Owens
Image
White to move and draw.

24-20 drew the game after 16-19, 20-16 etc, but Mr. Owens played here 32-28? and lost after 16-19, 31-27. 9-14, 22-17, 8-11 etc WW

#2. Rd.5, G1. L. Kondlo vs A. Berdiyeva
Image
Red to move.

I think something is wrong with recording of this game in applett. Recording ended up in this position with red move which is a clear Bowen Twince win and result is shown as draw ! I can't beleive Lubabalo agreed with draw in winning position ... unless he was in serious time trouble which is quite possible.

#3. Rd.5, G2. B. Durdyev vs I. Zachos
Image
White to move and draw.

Another time trouble game ? Ingo played here losing 15-10? but draw was close: 17-14, 9x18, 7-10

#4. Rd.5, G2. R. Tovagliaro vs F. Kareta
Image
Red to move and win.

White just played here suspiious 18-15?? which appears to be an earlier loss.

#5. Rd.5, G2. A. Berdiyeva vs L. Kondlo
Image
White to move and win.

WOW Thats a good one ! Lubabalo missed a pretty win here by playing 22-17* etc WW. Instead, he played 6-2? which leaded only to unfornate draw after 18x25, 30x21, 15-18, 2-7, 19-24 etc. Draw. Could this missing have influence on the final outcome ? The history doesn't like the word "IF" !

#6. Rd.5, G2. J. Morrison vs I. Martinov
Image
White to move and win.

It was a comedy of errors in this game. I am giving here position where the final error was made. White had draw here by 24-20*, 16-19, 23x16, 12x19, 7-2 etc Draw but lost the game after 7-2, 16-20, 2-7. Here on applett remark says that white have a draw by 23-19 where I disagree ! I think after 7-2 white has lost everywhere.

Round 6.

#7. Rd.6, G1. B. Durdyev vs L. Kondlo
Image
Red to move and draw.

Bashim didn't play it safely in the past but it was still a draw there after 18-23 or even 11-15. However, 6-10? as played in the game loses.

#8. Rd.6, G1. R. Tovagliaro vs R. Beckwith
Image
White to move and win.

17-14* should win here without much troubles, but Richard played very strange 26-22? here with eventual draw.

#9. Rd.6, G1. A. Bishop vs G. Owens
Image
Red to move and win.

Perhaps first time in my "Missing ..." series where bad move was transformed from win into loss ! Anthony had a win here by 2-7*, 32-27, 7-11, 27-23 (Or 30-26, 5-9* RW), 19x26, 30x23, 11-16 etc - red win due to move. Instead, Anthony played losing 5-9??

#10. Rd.6, G1. J. Francis vs C. Ciampi
Image
White to move.

Well known to published play position from Glasgow. White has an easy and unevenful draw here by 25-22. Instead, Italian master played 31-26? and lost after 15-18*, 32-27, 18-22*, 25x18, 12-16, 20x11, 10-15, 17x10, 15x31, 10-7, 31x24 and white resigned because red are willing to play here 9-14, 1-5 and winning a man by 2x3 trade.

#11. Rd.6, G2. R. Beckwith vs R. Tovagliaro
Image
Red to move and win.

I really hope in this event Richard collected all his missings for another 5 years ! In this game Richard had much easy win before but this is where he actually missed a win by not playing 15-19*. Instead, Richard played 15-18? allowing white to drew the game after 10-15, 24-28, 15-19, 28-32, 20-16, 31-27 etc Draw

#12. Rd.6, G2. I. Zachos vs F. Kareta
Image
White to move and win.

Another good one for curiosity collection! 24-19 here just simply captured a man without compensation, but Mr. Kareta played instead 12-8? allowing Ingo Zachos to escape by 15-19! Huh

#13. Rd.6, G2. G. Owens vs A. Bishop
Image
White to move and win.

White played here 11-8? and draw was agreed. Where do you think they should go instead ?

#14. Rd.6, G2. L. Kondlo vs B. Durdyev
Image
White to move and draw.

Lubabalo opened this game by exciting 3-mover 12-16, 24-20, 11-15 ! It seems like it was a good choice by grandmaster and his young opponent didn't handle it well having a strong side of weak opening. Right before position on diagram occured, Lubabalo played 11-16? and missed a win by 24-28*. In position on diagram Bashir can drew the game by 32-28*, 7-11, 28x10, 10-14, 17x10 (18x9 also draw)6x24, 22-17 etc Draw. Instead, Bashir Durdyev played here 30-26? and lost after 16-20, 23-19, 7-11, 17-14, 10x17, 21x14, 11-16 etc RW

Alex, my game against Filip was a time-trouble game.
I know 2-7 in the Doctor is better, but I touched the piece on 3, so had to move it, but Filip then played the opening badly and I should have won with 14-18...but...

Strange that I saw the 14-18 win, but played 11-15, thinking that was a safer win, missing the 23-18 shot possibility entirely...
Same happend to Filip: He saw 24-19 a clear win, but thought he can play it anyway later, and 12-8 to be an easier win. He missed the 19-15 shot idea entirely.
We both had 3 or 4 minutes after move 14 I think, and 1 minuter or less for the last 5 moves...

For me it is a clear case of mutual rejecting to win against a good friend
