Re: Heart Attack
I spoke with Alex's daughter earlier (3:00p.m.) and she told me that Alex was scheduled to undergo bypass surgery within the hour. The doctor told them that he would be going home within a few days and would need to get a lot bed rest.

I have heard that Alex is in much better spirits since the incident. His wife even bought him a toy checkerboard!

Re: Heart Attack
Hello, everyone !
Thanks for support, kind posts in forum, emails and phone calls in the past couple days.
I am back home from Ohio Riverside Hospital, everything is under control now. I had a mid-level heart attack, rated in hospital as 4 (10 - death). I had cauterization procedure and they figured out I had closure of Femoral Artery (99%). Doctor put stent in it. That's all about. I am going to quit smoking and taken some diet regime going forward. The number of medicine I'll be force to take daily is slowly growing
I can start driving on Friday and lift more than 10 pounds in couple weeks.
My next checkers event will be District 4, NC November 1-2. Doctor said that long drive is OK but I have to stop every 2-3 hours for 5-10 minutes rest.
Galina's board is perfectly fine, but this is not exactly what I needed - travel magnetic board ... kind of deficit in USA
I plan to resume my work from home as computer programmer on Monday and will contact with my primary care doctor and cardiology doctor regarding rehabilitation and other things.
Regards,
Alex

Re: Heart Attack
This has been an unusually high year of heart attacks and deaths for checkers players.
I'm so happy for Alex and family that this wasn't a killer! Hopefully this successful operation will keep our Grand Master Alex around for a long time playing checkers.
Incidentally, I want to mention that John Acker was the 1st email transmitter on the news! He forward an email from Galina and posted in CHECKERS on facebook. I appreciate John letting us know and updating on Checkers.

Re: Heart Attack
Dear Alex,
I was very sorry to hear your news and am delighted that you are now on the mend. Stopping smoking is no doubt a good move - it effectively killed my father and brother (I don't smoke), who both died at precisely the same age that I had by heart attack (51 and a half). On a scale of 1-10, mine registered at 9.5 - so I guess we can say we're both lucky.
I look forward to another fascinating book from you in the future and an attempt on the world title when you feel ready.
Stay well, Richard

Richard, I also was very glad to hear in May that maximum worse things not happened with you.Richard Pask wrote:On a scale of 1-10, mine registered at 9.5
My young daughter (14) created a "non-smoking" flyer two years ago which she putted on the wall. it contained information about all damage smoking generate to you: financial, physical, moral etc. Three days ago I took flyer from the wall, signed it off and returned to her. She was very happy and excited.
Anyway ... my Russian friends strongly recommended me yoga as recovery tool. So far I started to study it (theoretically) before making decision. Most important thing is your brain, not body. All commands and all problems are coming from here. You need maximum relaxation and nothing should bother you. Leave only "one day ahead", don't think about anything and don't take seriously anything.
All for now.

Re: Heart Attack
Hello Alex:
I was very sorry to hear of your heart attack. I would like to wish you the best of success with your recovery.
Quitting smoking is a task that requires the "eye of the tiger." You have that and I know you can do it. No retreat, no surrender.
The practice of yoga can help you strengthen the mind-body connection it takes to achieve a higher state of inner peace and harmony. Its physical and mental benefits can be enormous.
Good luck, champ!
