How did we all miss this?

Post by Richard Pask »

Evidently RLF, John Anderson, Jim Morrison and myself all missed a 3 for 2 win in Game 42 Trunk of the 6th International Match! Oh, and don't forget Jim Loy. or am I going mad?

Yes, very strange oversight! This is how drawn game appears in 1995 Checkers magazine (ICHF), p. 157, and this presumes editor got correct order of moves (as actually played and recorded) into the magazine:

[Event "6th IM G. 42"][Date ""][Black "Anderson"][White "Morrison"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
1. 11-15 22-17 2. 15-19 24x15 3. 10x19 23x16 4. 12x19 25-22 5. 8-11 27-23 6. 4-8 23x16 7. 11x20 29-25 8. 7-10 17-13 9. 8-11 26-23 10. 3-8 22-18 {allows winning 20-24, but not played!} 11. 10-15 25-22 12. 9-14 18x9 13. 5x14 32-27 14. 8-12 22-17 15. 11-16 17x10 16. 15-19 10-7 17. 2x11 21-17 18. 19x26 30x23 19. 6-10 23-18 20. 10-15 18-14 21. 16-19 13-9 22. 19-23 27x18 23. 15x22 14-10 1/2-1/2

Since the game runs up perfectly and it is very hard to rearrange the moves sensibly to avoid the shot, one can only assume that this is the true record. Sadly, JA is no longer with us, but Jim is so perhaps he can help?

Very nice finding, Richard, congratulation ! We all are humans and your wonderful discovery just proved once again this fact.
I am playing checkers, not chess.

Jim Morrison wrote me:

This was 18 years ago but I think the moves are correct . I didn't see this during the game but noticed it later when running it up. I had my rabbit's foot with me that day.

This is very gracious of Jim. I published the game on pp 114-115 of Total Checkers A Guide & Companion Volume 1, and didn't spot the error for 15 years!
Incidentally, I'm thoroughly enjoying the 21st Century Checkers project, and in producing it have considerably firmed up a lot of the play I gave in Solid Checkers. Taking into account the amendments I have given in the 9-14s, 10-14s and 10-15s, I am hopeful that this will prove to be a very reliable guide.
