Checkers in Difficult Times

Post by chipschap »

We are all appreciative of the recent ACF Bulletin and the 50th Problem Composition Contest. These give us a welcome diversion during difficult days.

The Checker Maven would like to provide a little extra, too, and so in addition to our regular Saturday columns, we're starting an every-other-Wednesday "bonus" column which will feature a difficult problem, one that might take you some time to solve and perhaps help keep your mind off of other things. We'll try to keep this up for at least three special editions, maybe more depending on circumstances. Problem solutions will not be published until two weeks have elapsed.

The idea came to us from Brian Hinkle, who offered us some of his super-tough compositions.

We hope you enjoy this special feature. Look for the first of the series at 2020-03-25 00:02 HST.

Willie Ryan wrote 'an inspiring letter' to one of his many correspondents, which appeared in 'Elam's Checker Board' many years ago. When I read it, I too found it inspiring: the focus being on what this person could do and not what he couldn't do.

Had Willie ever written a bona fide beginner's book, I'm certain it would have been superb.

What do you like about checkers?: Mostly the good memories with my grandparents! Now that I've got children of my own who are old enough to learn about the game, I'd like to know a bit more about it and be able to teach it in a better way.

Thanks for the information, I'll be following that!
Sure, I cannot attend tournaments (not that I'd be worth anything there, I have only played checkers with my family, at one or two exceptions), but I like playing with my kids, who have taken a liking to it; they have to keep busy somehow in these times! "Fortunately" enough, I don't have the time to get bored, as I've been working from home for years now, and there's no reason to stop doing things like analyzing these Cannes property prices for the last 5 years and coming up with patterns to compare them with similar data from other cities...

Just a reminder that the second problem in our special series, CV-2 "Brian's Bridge" (by Brian Hinkle) will be published in The Checker Maven on Wednesday, April 8 at 00:02 AM HST. We will also publish the solution to CV-1, Brian Hinkle's incredible 2x3, at the same time.

Additional problems in the series by Brian Hinkle and Ed Atkinson are planned, at two-week intervals. We're not sure how long the series will continue but we sure hope it doesn't get up to CV-19.
