Looking back at the mid 60's....................

Post by Alan Millhone »

Hello Ms. Becky:

I still have a stack of letters from Tommie Wiswell, Newell W. Banks, some from Clayton O. Beebe, I.W. Peterson, one from Ben Boland , Elzy Langdon (Checker board maker),etc.

You are correct on the 'personal touch' given by those men. Mr. Banks stayed at my home for a week one time and gave me a personalized copy of his BANK'S BLINDF0LD MASTERPIECES. Certain books in my library have special meanings as to how they were acquired, etc. Tommie Wiswell carried 2 suitcases while on tour. He carried a minimum of clothes and mostly books, books, books ! His book sales did very well for him at his simultaneous exhibitions. Mr. Banks had his name on his own Chess and Checkerboards that he sold at his exhibitions. I still have a couple of each and never see them offered today for sale. Those 'good old days' are gone forever, but the memories will last me forever.

I note that many books from the library of the late Bill Henson were donated by his Wife to the Illinois Association and will be sold at their upcoming tournament (I will be in attendance). Book sale proceeds will go to the treasury of the Illinois Association :-)

Sincerely:
Alan Millhone, President
