Yes,it means teacher (or tutor) of the world.
In chess at various times, Steinitz, Tarrasch, Euwe and Nimzowitsch had been called "Praeceptor Mundi" in order to emphasize their importance in chess literature.

To me, Oldbury is one of the great "techers" with his outstanding publications.

Also Ryan and Pask come into mind.

Herman Hoogland was the 1912 World Champion in International (10x10) Checkers and the first Dutch player to do so.
He also played several other draughts types including English and Frisian that sounds like what you describe with vertical jumps

Just to support the notion of preserving and sharing, here is the next volume of Encyclopedia Volume 5

Praeceptor Mundi (Latin) is a true and appropriate title for DEO. I've seen the Encyclopedia only since it is posted on the Online Checkers Library, but like Derek Edward Oldbury's other writings it is spirited and opinionated, always urging the reader to THINK.

Jake, thank you for posting The Complete Encyclopedia Of Checkers in six volumes by Derek Oldbury....I am reluctant to report that I cannot find Volume I in the Straight Checkers section of the Online Checkers Library.

I will work on volume 1 this weekend, this will end the year long project. While scanning I could not help but notice how innovative DEO was with presentation of material, as you said - he was making one THINK!
I also enjoyed reading his insights on the game - they were applicable to all types of checkers.

The Encyclopedia project is over!! The first thanks go to George Miller, the former World Correspondence Champion, who passed these books to Martin Fierz, the author of CheckerBoard and Cake programs, who in his turn passed the books to the OCL library for maximum access.

Jake, thanx again for posting DEO's Encyclopedia, all the incredible six volumes! As Olbury himself wrote in the Forward to Vol. I:

I would emphasise that, except in passages clearly shown as “ quotes” , all opinions herein are my own— especially the outrageous ones.

These six volumes are indeed a treasure of the wit and wisdom of Derek Olbury!

The first ten days of April produced 20 items on straight checkers in the library, not bad at all!
