George, many thanks for your fantastic, terrific input and research. I will put updated list of ACF GM's soon.

I am thinking about "cutoff date" - 1905, when ACF was created originally.

Next assignment to you - mail players.

So far I have 4 names in mind: RLF, Jerry Childer, Max Banks, Tommy Canning. Remember - criteria: get twice (at least) on top 3 in ACF National Tournament / Ladder or play World Title matches.

Here is some more information from Ed Atkinson:

M. Lieber was accidentally left off my list. He finished with an 8-0-32 score in the Second Int. Match, 1927. Ginsburg was 11-3-26. More importantly Lieber tied his famous match with Gonotsky, 1929, with a 0-0-40 score. Lieber missed one win; Gonotsky missed none. I think that they were the two strongest players in the world at this time.

Milton Loew defeated Asa Long twice in the 1960 American Ty., Eau Clair. He also defeated H. Freyer in a match in the early 1950s. Jack Cox told me that Loew did not want to challenge Hellman to a title match because he did not want to assume the obligations of a world title holder. This paved the way for the second Hellman-Long Match, 1962, tied 2-2-36. Loew was fourth behind Case, Hellman and Long at the Ocean City, 1952 American Ty.

Back in the mid 1950s Wiswell played on third board behind Freyer and Jack Cox in a New York versus Pennsylvania Team Match. With Ryan's death and Loew's exit from N. Y. Freyer and Cox were considered the two strongest players in New York. A match was arranged and the score was 1-1-10. Not so long after that Freyer played a match with Tinsley prior to the latter's departure to play Oldbury. Score 0-0-10.

In 1970 I played a series of twelve games with Cox at his home in Philadelphia. There was no doubt in my mind that he was tougher than Lowder with whom I had played seven tournament games. Was Jack Cox a Grandmaster?

K. Grover defeated Hellman in a 20 game match. If memory serves he was second to Hellman in one of the 1946 national championships. He was third behind Chamblee and Cameron but ahead of Tinsley and Ryan in the 1950 American Ty., Paxton. At the 1968 11-man Championship he was second to Fuller and beat Long and Freyer along the way.

thanks George but i was thinking more of a points table,

just wanted to see it when i came 4th in ireland and the players i played against i cant really remember much about it.

2004 i scored 16 points in the seniors section. well im a master now after wining the majors in the Barbados open last year

There was another grandmaster about 20 years ago, his name started with M, it was told he was the last live grandmaster (besides Levitt)

Mr. Alex, I have not found any list of winners of ACF Mail Play Ladders. However, I do know it was in the very capable and hardworking hands of Mr. Earl Hangen as the long term ACF Mail Play Director. The Mail Play Ladders were very popular and competitive. I found this article about Checkers Mail Play World Champion Richard Fortman, another great save by JR Smith!

My opinion - placing in top 3 gives 1 norm, but you need 2 norms to achieve title. Or you can get title automatically if you win World Title.

Nigel Proffitt is the 11 man ballot mail champion.

If I am not mistaken, Mr. Proffitt resides in Wales. I think it is WCDF responsibility and privilege to award G. Miller and N. Proffitt with GM titles in order to recognize their performance and contribution to mail play. I am in favor now to stick into 4 names I mentioned. The only additional candidate for ACF GM title could be (and we discuss) probably P. Thompson ?
