Patrick, I can answer on both of your questions.

1. On first question regards soundnes 15-18, the answer is - YES, this move is sounds and drawn. KingsRow discovered this some time ago. After 23-14 the drawn move is 11-16 and 11-15 loses.

2. On the second question ... this line is covered in Lee's Guide, where he gives only 11-15 and first few moves from winning path. I played this line two times with losing 11-15.

First time against R. Hallett in 1999 GAYP National and was close to win it.

Second time I played it against William Docherty in Eliminator match 2001 when I was 3 games down  and won it.

However - I stopped playing it since then and I am unaware if there are any other takers of this line on serious occasion in modern days.

Personally I would not recommend anyone to use it today in tournament / match play against good opponents. Such experiments are good only first and one time :D Maximum you can get here - unfortunate draw after 11-16.

==========================================
The reason this line is popular in Internet play, because I started using it back to the end of 90's. After then it was passed to later generations from years to years !!!

Nothing new under the sun ! I was laughing when folks played this line on me recently on Kurnik.

Sincerely,

Alex

Prompted by your questions Pedro, regarding databases, I have been working on clarifying how GoldToken views them, because it does seem there is a wide margine of misunderstanding in this area.

Whether you use a book or a computerized database, there is little difference, except the computerized database is likely to be much faster, very much more complete, and in general more accurate. However in principle it is the same thing: you are looking something up, not having an evaluation calculated based on a given position.

So the difference between the use of computer engines --- a no-no for sure --- and the use of computer databases --- which in essence uses the computer as a passive lookup device, not as an active calculator or evaluator.

Any online database (again, consulted in a passive lookup fashion) ought to be fair game and fair play.

You had also asked me about Fortman's Basic Checkers that is available online in text form; I looked it up and find it is certainly legitimate.

Alex, anytime we can promote a game that is based on intelect rather than luck, we do the world a service. True, gaming is all about fun, but it is also about widening our intelectual horizons and making us think outside of the box! I think the kids of today have lost some of that due to the onset of XBOX and other instant action gaming that are aimed more at motor skills than the mind. Not that action games are bad, combat and strategy are great, but Halo and such tend to be time consuming in a different way and stop the interest in chess and checkers, games I would feel take more brain skill and definately used throughout a life time vs a faze.

But Kurnik is also live play. IYT, Gold Token and Wyllie are turn-based. I only play turn-based and up to now I have only seen you play live.

It is now possible to play Italian, Pool, Russian, Brazilian, International and Canadian Checkers on GoldToken.
They were installed yesterday evening.
This is in addition to Straight, Giveaway and Restriction (Three-Move Ballot) Checkers, which were already available.
