Re: Multi-gamers in history
Dr. Emanuel Lasker ended up defending his Chess World Championship twice in 1910, first against Schlechter in January-Februray and then against Janowski in November-December. In March, 1910 Alfred Jordan won the London Draughts Championship. Jordan would have been hard for Lasker to beat. First, it is checkers not chess, and second Jordan was probably a tougher mind games competitor than either of Lasker's chess opponents. One reason for that is certainly Jordan would keep to the Wyllie maxim: Keep the draw in sight.

Re: Multi-gamers in history
Merry X-mas everybody,
Emanuel Lasker himself was a multi-gamer.
He was World Champion in chess,
one of the best German Go players (beating a European Champion once),
has worked as a professional bridge teacher (and was said to be the best bridge player among the chess players)
and in his simultaneous tours in Britain and the USA he also used to play a few games of checkers simultaneously additional to a few dozen chess games.
He also invented his own game, Lasca, which resembles more similarities with checkers then with chess.
He attended the Sixth American Checker Tourney 1924 US (won by Gonotsky), but only as a guest. You can find his picture on page 56 of the famous tournament book. He scored his famous 1924 New York tournament victory way ahead of Capablanca and Aljechin in the same hotel the week prior to the 6th American!
Lasker wrote books about board games (Brettspiele der Völker, 1931) and card games (Das verständige Kartenspiel, 1929).
BTW: He was born on December 24th 1868, so we just celebrated his 147th birthday here in Germany.
I do not think he should be compared to Alfred Jordan, but more to Richard Jordan, Samuel Gonotsky or Marion Tinsley, being one of the the best players of all times in the board game where he excelled.
Certainly he was the best player that ever lived when he was World Champion, and it took a player 20 years his junior, himself one of the best of all times, to beat him in the only match he ever lost.
Had Emanuel Lasker and Alfred Jordan played a match of say 10 chess games and 10 checker games I am sure Lasker would have won all chess games and lost most, but not all of the checker games to secure an overall win. He could certainly not have challenged Alfred Jordan in checkers to win a match, but he was a very good expert player judging from the sources that are available to me, so he would ppl. secure the one or the other draw in 10 games.
If anyone could find records of the games Emanuel Lasker played in checkers in old checker/draughts magazines, I would be more then happy to see them.
Lasker was also a mathematician (like Tinsley), and he secured his living by working as a mathematician in Germany for several big German companies, only being a semi-professional chess player.
Having lost much of his fortune in the 1929 financial crises, he was forced to write the above mentioned books and he migrated to the Netherlands and the UK, working as a bridge teacher. When in 1933 the Nazis took power, he and his wife Martha, both being Jews, decided to stay abroad. Lasker went to Moscow, to play in the 1935 tournament and also was employed as a mathematician there. He tried to go to the UK, but his requests for asylum were denied there several times, and he finally ended his chess career with the honorable 7th/8th place finish at the Nottingham 1936 chess tournament:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nottingha ... tournament
After that he was granted permanent residence in the USA, where he lived as a bridge teacher and died on January 11th 1941 in New York after a short, but fatal illness.
In Germany, his memory was tainted by the Nazis and their chess authorities. In text books his name was erased, and his achievements diminished as being inferior, most infamously by the pamphlet of the World Champion Alexander Aljechin, being marked as "cowardly, inferior, typically jewish chess".
As most of the chess writers and authorities of that time also played the most important part in restoring chess in Germany after 1945 (both East and West), his reputation was not restored, tough his name now appeared in the text books again. So, in 1968, when his 100th anniversary came, both the West German and the East German chess federation failed to organize a tournament or a celebration in his honor.
Since then, a lot has been done to restore his reputation and Lasker was one of the first sportspersons to be included in the Hall Of Fame of the German Olympic Sports Confederation due to his achievements for Germany.

Re: Multi-gamers in history
I read many stories of Lasker excel at Russian checkers, there are games and pictures. Most famous in Russia his statement that checkers is mother of chess.

Re: Multi-gamers in history
I am proud to see that my man, Slocum apparently beat Pillsbury 3 to 2 and 4 draws.

A - C. Hefter and J. Denvir suggested the supposedly winning 18-23 sacrifice to the anonymous player. But the game is a draw, from here on out, including the final position.

There are many accounts of Pillsbury's blindfold and sighted exhibitions throughout the newspapers. But most give no actual games. Bert Titus (above) is famous for repeatedly claiming to prove that the Phantom Fox Den problem is a draw, and that the White Doctor gambit is a loss. He also became a strong blindfold player.
