Newspaper Article on Frdiay

Post by Alan Millhone »

Hello Everyone:

I just got off the phone with a reporter by the name of Dennis O'Brion of the Baltimore Sun. He interviewed me at great length and his article can be found this Friday at: http://www.BaltimoreSun.com

Be nice if one of you readers could watch for the article and perhaps post on the forum, thanks!

Media is on the way !!!

Yesterday I've got a phone call from Canadian Newspaper and email from New York Times Science Reporter. Both of them asked me about Chinook team announcement regarding "solving checkers".

I told them the true - only GAYP was solved and this fact has very small influence on my life and future. I gave all compliments to Chinook team and highlighted importancy of this terrific scientific fact !

The reporter from New York Times promised me to send newspaper with article when it will be published.

Sincerely,

Alex Moiseyev

I am a little bit sceptical about this

Publication itself has nothing to do with promotion. It highly depends on content, tone and spirit of article. I saw several publications about checkers, which were written like ... "From strange world", "These people live between us" ... or "Wildlife" Such sort of articles can only make more damage to checkers. Two or three times I sent repoters away to hell when realised the tone of upcoming article.

 Alex future generations may have to look to higher powers in their quest to keep checkers alive, i.e. the Queen could "knight" a famous draughtsman or the church could declare a famous checker player a "saint". I am in agreement with what you say concerning the newspaper articles, although over the years many articles have been written about our library and museum--all of which were very favorable to checkers. "Mr. Checkers"

I received an e-mail from an AP reporter questioning me about my thoughts on Chinook's progress. I will post the link once the article is completed (should be later on this week).

Here are some on-line article links. (Thanks to Pal Bucker for many of these.) I also spoke with LA Times, NY Times, Chicago Tribune, and COSMOS (Australian Magazine). I have a few more thoughts in Player's Rep Corner.

It is notable in the two articles, that in referring to the 1994 Tinsley v Chinook rematch, it is conveniently omitted to make any mention that Tinsley withdrew due to illness. An uninformed reader of the articles could be forgiven for assuming that Chinook had beaten Tinsley in one or more games of the 1994 match.

Nice to see in the

What do you like about checkers?: I love strategy games and checkers fits the bill for a great strategy game, that requires logic and problem solving skills.

yes I agree with Liam - I was pretty ticked off about that fact

I was also ticked off with the wording at the beginning of both articles. Chinook solving checkers has little to do with how we humans play checkers in tournaments, so telling people to "put down their pieces and go home" is completely retarded...

Hah !!!
Next time, maybe they can figure it out with the board in the correct setting...

I know, I know, this is not a Schaeffer approved photo,.....it's just that, the news media would go so far as to tell everyone they might as well quit playing, pack it up and go home, etc., and won't even look far enough into their assessment of information to post a correct photo....
Who edited this article ( the discover article) Brittany Grayson ??

I diasgree with Liam, Clay and anyone else who wants to restate this story and outcome. This is our history and our heritage.

Lets make it clear - M. Tinsley officially resigned his match to Chinook regardless the reason, and later M. Tinsley always and clearly supported and proved this fact. Chinook won match and I beleive there is no reason today to discuss this again after decades. Dr. Schaeffer wrote about this whole story in his book "One Jump Ahead".

If any of you want to to put this outcome in question - you will be in controversary with Marion Tinsley, who always stated after match until he passed away, that he lost.

Lets respect people and facts. And the fact is that Tinsley didn't withdrew the match - he resigned.

Today Chinook provided a scientific proof, that GAYP is a drawn game. In fact - the human knew this more than 100 years ago  , but today we have a proof of this fact.

Here is a small portion of email, which Dr. Schaeffer wrote to me two days ago in response of some my questions:

============================================================
> One reporter said something like: "now checkers
> are sold as well as tic-toc ?" and this question break my heart !

Yeah. A couple of said the same thing to me and I immediately correct
them. Comparing checkers to TTT is insulting. TTT really IS a trivial
game. Any comparisons between the two is ridiculous.

=============================================================

If you are mad with these articles, do not transfer your madness into wrong directions !

Respectfully,

A. Moiseyev

Yes, Tinsley did resign

Post by EddieMoore »

None the less...what's wrong with making sure the story is completely accurate? Tinsley did, in fact, resign due to illness--something many readers of that piece may not be aware of. Since you mention Dr.Shaffer,he did mention in his book that he would always regret the fact there would be an asterisk in that match "win." The score was even when Tinsley resigned and it's doubtful he would have lost the full match had he been healthy.
