WCDF GA Meeting 2009

Post by liam stephens »

Apparently it has been mooted that remote access and participation in the WCDF GA 2009 meeting should be allowed by the use of SKYPE technology. Does that mean that those who have Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger will also be allowed to participate on-line at the meeting?

Apart from it being an unfair advantage for those who possess the technology, if anything should have been learned from the Buncrana and Beijing events, it is that the strict rules of the Olympic Committee prohibiting the presence of laptops or other electronic equipment in the vicinity of venue rooms should be applied, not only in the competitions but also at AGMs or other official meetings.

I understand that proxy voting is allowed to those Members unable to attend simply by sending in the proxy paper slip. There should be no special preferences or privileges favouring those with high tech computers.

Perhaps so John. But the associated video and camera equipment is probably a significant cost item and maybe not so easy to operate for the non-technical person.

It depends of financial abilities and what we call "significant" For me it was cost $50 for camera (micropohone included) and standard Windows downloading software from camera disc - another 3-4 minutes. After then everything was ready.

If both correspondents have Skype it cost them ZERO pennies. You also can use Skype for normal (not video) International and long distance phone calls - this will be much, much less (10-20 times less) than standard long distance services.

But all after all ... Not all people in the World today have phone or computer. Should we also exclude usage of phones in conference and meeting rooms ?
I am playing checkers, not chess.

Yes, they are a confounded nuisance and disturbance. Also on tubes, buses and trains.

I recall a competitor in the Chess event at Beijing was disqualified when his mobile phone rang.
