Turn-based titles?
The ACF recognizes mail play/postal titles. Why not turn-based titles? True that these are like mail play, but the results could be resolved sooner. Furthermore, with the number of players interested in turn-based play, official recognition could provide a good deal of publicity, as well as ego-boosts to players.
My idea is that tournaments and matches could be co-sponsored by the ACF Club in Gold Token. ACF could require ACF membership for competitors to an ACF title. Matches or tournaments would be possible for state titles (restricted to residents of the state) age categories (seniors, juniors, ect.) women and so forth.
I think recognizing mail play and not turn-based has only the excuse that we have a giant holding the mail play title. I would, in fact, favor declaring mail play a form of turn-based and declare the current mail play title holders to be turn-based title holders. And the switch could begin by recognizing other tournaments and titles (a turn-based committee could set up rules).
I know some folks worry about the possibility of cheating, but it is no different from mail play.
I do have a conflict of interest in this case. My back makes crossboard play a problem for me. Given that there seem to be no active Maryland players a turn-based title would be fertile ground for me. However, Maryland, I suspect, has some good pool checkers players who could take up our game if there were a competition easily accessible. Either way I win, with a title or the success of getting other Marylanders into ACF.

Shoot "Billyboy" a PM.
The last I talked with him, he was living in York, PA. (right over the Maryland border).....but I know he is from Maryland, and his family is from Maryland.
Perhaps you could swing a little "get together".....
I would try to join in, if possible....I live in Berks County, PA...not very far....

Like I said, my back makes crossboard play problematic. Which is one reason I stick to turn-based.Jay H wrote:Pedro Saavedra wrote:

I know, and neither do serious turn-based players. I was addressing the bias against turn-based because cheating is possible. It is possible with mail play, but serious mail players do not.tommyc wrote:Pedro Mail players dont cheat.

Re: Turn-based titles?
Part of my concern is that with greater access there could be more formal titles and tornaments recognized by ACF. We have a fair amount of participation at Gold-Token and other servers, and it could translate in more ACF activity. And I think that recognized titles would contribute to this.JohnAcker wrote:I'm not sure about the I-D tournaments, but I know that postal play on the ACF ladders has already been supplanted by email play. What's the difference between that and turn-based, aside from storing the moves and position on a separate server? Perhaps it would make more sense to open up an ACF turn-based ladder, or allow mailplay challenges to take place via GoldToken or IYT.

I was addressing my response to Pedro, dunno wat yur doing sticking your oar in John.
But seeing you have ,id call thats Mail play, theres no rule says yu cant use Chinook or any other prog. Anyway Chinook is not the top prog anymore and you are way behind the times ,as usual talking thru your hat just to hear youself ........i await Pedros response as that is who i was discussing this with.

Re: Turn-based titles?
Obviously that depends on the rules of the event. I used to play in an event where getting help from another player was considered cheating. In most turn-based servers and most chess e-mail events the use of computers is forbidden. Most people would want these rules in their events, and not following the stipulated rules is a form of cheating.tommyc wrote:[Its not possible to cheat in Mail play,if it is i have never found it.
Personally, I would like to see both kinds of events. Just like in chess there have been cross-board computer assisted tournaments.

- What do you like about checkers?: .....
Re: Turn-based titles?
Tommy / Pedro, what do you think about 4-moves restriction for mail or turn based play ? Mail players were always ahead of tournaments players. Why not keeping this tradition and be a pioneers again ?
Playing 4-moves restriction may give mail play a second life.

I think is another style, and one that would make sense. But I would like to see it be turn-based. One reason, for me, isAlex_Moiseyev wrote:Tommy / Pedro, what do you think about 4-moves restriction for mail or turn based play ? Mail players were always ahead of tournaments players. that I like to check my moves at lunch at the office. If I merely need to make a compulsory jump or know the book I might make my move (I will admit that if not much is at stake I make my move on other occasions). At the office I cannot set up my board or use any special software to take the place of one. I count on the server having such facilities.
I think this makes sense for major titles. But I still have this fantasy of a return to the days of not only state, but county and neighborhood champions, and of matches between alumni of different institutions or between different professions (Chess World does something like that in chess).
Years ago I stopped by an old general store and it had a checker set prepared for action. I had the fantasy of moving to the town and taking on the local champion. In many servers people list their hometown. This would be a great venue for the return of those days. Whenever I think of the same thing crossboard, my back starts to hurt.

Here's to never quitting on the game itself...!!!!
