NEW BLOOD IN CHECKERS

Post by tommyc »

New Blood in checkers??...............................No one person can do this in isolation there has to a "team" mind-set to succeed. The fact that there are no coaching courses or coaches is a big minus factor.....thus team mindset is the only other solution. So i suggest you gather yourselves into "team units" and trade and share information is a good way of rising up the ranks.
Of course id want to see these young-guns in kurnik harnessed in some form or other and tailor some Tys to fit their needs. That would be a positive step and a win-win for all concerned..

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

couldn't the ACF or any other organisation do a tournament on Kurnik (online of course) and then those players that win or do well or wish to do so can be officially "invited" and/or "challenged" to come and play at a 'real' tournament??? it would take very little effort and if those players are invited to events in their state they might attend.

In fact if i was organising a district and or state tournament the first thing i would do is 2 months b4 my event i would hold online tournaments online in kurnik, challenging these young guns. you might get a few more ACF members and some of them might actually fall in love with the game.

B4 yáll knock me and my stupid idea down, i said "might" , it might not work, but what harm is there in trying?

Sincerely,

Hi Danny, Why in the world would you want to play your opponents online right before a tournament? Only way to benefit doing that is to make a private name that they dont know. But anyways we covered this topic on numerous chats its not happening brother man. Billy

Danny,

that's not a bad idea, but I rather would chat with the players and inform them about the event.

Many players are afraid to reveal secrets before they play in a tournament, but in Germany many players, like me, Dennis Pawlek, Thomas Wien, Irene Paetzold etc., were recruited on the net, but rather on yahoo or Its your turn then kurnik.
So in your case I would try that.

If you find that a group of them meet regularly, like we in Germany had in the German rooms of yahoo before they introduced their annoying new password system,
ask them.
Give them your mail address and try to contact them regularly.
If you meet them not in groups you should still give them your email, as many are interested.

But don't be disappointed if you ask 30 players, get a friendly feedback by 20 of them, and only 3 attend a tournanemt or want to meet other players.

Many online players are simply not interested at all, or are only claiming to be real persons.
Some are just multiple personalities of reknown players, that seem to like that kind of game more then tournament play, actully the tell all kind of stange tales sometimes.
Others may be only using checkerboard or "buddies", ie programs that log in and play under your name, and do not even know the rules without it.

But most are just ordinary ppl that look for a chat by playing a "simple" game, or are interested, but not so much that they invest time and money.
These ppl should also be a "target group", but only in the long run.

But some are fine and ardent lovers of the game and can be "hooked", even turn out to be "old foxes" or having thought about organizing something before.
So don't get bothered by the others, especially not by trouble makers.

And try to convince especially "weaker" players that not everybody is a master, as some seem to think that tournaments are entirely made for good players, which is of course not true.
Tell them that you are a rookie yourself and that their help is appreciated.

Try to be upbeat, but square.

Yes, it is. Big money prices in real tournaments can attract them. Otherwise - what the reason to come, waste time and money ???
I am playing checkers, not chess.

Has anyone taken the time to go to their schools and recruit students? Get together and promote checkers like chess. In some schools I am sure there is chess clubs. Why not checkers? As for online I for one have been searching for a game site that I can sit down and have a friendly game. In this day and age the internet is not just in one country it is world wide. If I could help in anyway I would.

Hello, Dr Barnes. I am intrigued by your interest in draughts, from your formative years to your newfound zest for our wonderful game. I also take note your comments about players approaching schools to recruit, hopefully, future players! Yes! This is a suggestion which carries great merit. William, (can we actually address you as just WILLIAM? Dr. to me seems too formal formal for down to earth draughts players). I do not know which country in which you reside, but I have past knowledge of two prominent Scottish players, who in there heydey, ( the late George Starrs from Dundee in Scotland; and the late David Glennie from Forfar,) approached their local primary schools about promoting draughts in the local schools. George was met with a healthy response within Dundee and a youth programme was initiated and bore fruit until George passed away. Similarly, David approached the educational authorities in Forfar, only to come up against a brick wall! He was asked what teaching qualififications he possessed? David was a farmer by occupation. Need I say any more? Also, it is becoming extremely more difficult to approach schools about these matters. Principals are one their toes nowadays regarding who may actually have phaedophiliac tendencies as their motive. On a brighter side, THANKFULLY, in Northern Ireland, draughts was embraced by the education authorities. Hence , we have within the draughts world two grand masters; Hugh Devlin and Shane MaCosker, AND many other playes of outstanding ability, just to mention Myles Hannigan, and the uprising John McElhone. Sincerely, Bernard Coll, Vice president of Scottish draughts assosciation

Danniel, in another topic I said the same thing you did, what if the prize of online players is to go to real tournament?..but there are good and "real" players online, most of them, young ones, of course NEW BLOOD is needed in CHECKERS!

Read the topic WOMEN AND YOUTH in general discussion board.....

Go to www.playok.com and I will be happy to play you some games. I was thinking of advertising for giving checkers lessons to young players. we'll see if I have time to do so.

Hi Danny, To attract online players to go to a tournament I will have to say the same thing as Alex it will be good money prizes. Another thing that might help will be better organized tournaments. A player will come back and get online and state this and that happned to me at this tournament or that. And I seen people get discouraged of the idea of competing in a tournament because of this. I myself only been 2 diffrent places PA for about 3 years and Nationals once. I did not have any wrong doings but im not that active compared to most players. Some of the stories was pretty wild and ACF needs to work on those tournament problems. I think ACF will be on the right track then. Have a good one Danny. Billy
