I have made some frienships with chess tourney players and a chess tourney director. We will be having dual quad ( for schools) chess and checker tournaments. Who can tell me if the associate membership will allow them to get rated. We see that option as the only affordable, attractive way to get participation.
Thanks,
Michael

Re: Ratings and Memberahip
Michael,
An associate membership is enough for a player to be rated. They of course would need to have the associate membership at the time of their first tournament in order to be rated. It will also allow them access to the ACF ratings listed on this site and hopefully also posted in the ACF bulletins soon.

Re: Ratings and Memberahip
Our plan is to have them sign up for the associate membership at the time of the tourney. Would this work? Also, can it be approved to have them pay $10 instead of the normal fee? Like have a fee for kids under 16 or 14 that only have to pay 10 and then after a certain age they have to pay the full associate amount? I guess those are questions for Alan and Dr. Beckwith but anyone on the ACF staff could chime in here too. I am just trying to find an appealing way to get kids to join. I also dont want to pass up this great opportunity to work with the chess tourney director to help expand checkers. In fact, all ACF members please chime in on this. Perhaps this should be one of the things we put out for a vote in February?
Thanks Joe and any others.

Michael, the $10 associate membership for kids is a good, practical suggestion.Michael Holmes wrote: In fact, all ACF members please chime in on this.

I think this sounds like a good idea. Is it just mainly ratings you are looking for them to have? Maybe we could also offer them a bulletin every 2 months for a little more expensive membership. Might be worth it since it is likely many will be switching to electronic bulletins.

Re: Ratings and Memberahip
To provide trophies to everyone and still pay for a higher membership fee would be difficult to keep the entry fee (which includes the price of trophy and membership fee) at a reasonable, attractive price. It would be nice to send one electronic bulletin to each new member. My suggestion is to send an electronic bulletin in April which would include the tournaments I plan to direct as well as upcoming information for the National. This might draw more of the youth to the National.........sooner or later.

good idea
ACF will not give ratings to less than full membership and bulletins to less than full membership
ut certainly would be nice if the ACF exec committee and officers would jump in and give CLEAR answers.

Re: Ratings and Memberahip
Ted,
Everyone who plays in official tournament gets rated, ACF member or not. ACF members get recognized on the ACF rating list, which includes members with full and associate memberships. I expect the ACF committee to approve of Michael's proposal.

I just found out that the tournament is on the weekend that I have Army training. It is also when the TN is suppose to be I think. So, looks like just the local club will be doing checker tournaments with the chess for now and next year I will do the checkers.
