Invalid Problem in Contest

Post by Chexhero »

Bill,

I emailed you about this, but thought I post it here just in case anyone was about to vote. Problem 1, Caleb Oldenjumper is a invalid problem. The final position at the end of the solution leads to this, but the 7-14 option for red is a loss for white, not a win. Checked it with program, but no win available for white. See below.

I think you have the board the wrong way round. White is moving up the board, Black is moving down the board. Black's next move is 26-19 and then White plays 24-8 to win. Also you have a White man missing on 18.

John, based on the way the board is set up, there is no win for white. I verified this with kingsrow program. It is possible there may be an error in regards to the pieces not being placed properly. And after looking at it, I think you are right, the mistake is the initial set up does not show a white piece on 18, if there was then white would have the win. That is probably the mistake. Bill can you verify this?

Correction, my first post it should read 26-19, not 7-14. My mistake and sorry for the confusion!

Colleagues:
A White single piece indeed should be added to Square 18 on the Caleb Oldenjumper diagram in Contest #11.
Its omission was entirely my fault.
I was unable to correct the diagram, so I pointed out the omission on the contest page in capital letters, and I asked Jason Solan to correct the diagram for me. I'm sure he will as soon as he learns of the issue.
Fortunately, the corresponding diagrams in the ACF Bulletin, the MCA Newsletter, and presumably John Reade's column were correct.
My apologies to all, especially to the composer.

Bill, it looks like Jason added the piece. A big thanks to you both. Glad we caught it early because only 3 people including myself voted, and I was voting for "Mr. X" regardless. In any case, all 4 problems were very well done.

The above image does not show a piece on 18 for you?
