From Danny:
No worries Michael, that sounds great
Whereabouts would you like to go, is there anything in particular you guys wish to see (apart from our distinct fauna ... you will see that whether you wish to or not lol.... either alive or dead on the side of the road)
i can definitely help you out . let me know a few months b4 you book the flights and i can give you some help. As far as the match goes i am sure you can beat me with your eyes closed and one arm tied behind your back
cheers
Danny

Danny, I realized I never went back to this thread and saw or answered your questions. We want to visit during the Tennis Austranlian Open. Most likely 2015. It doesnt have to be then but we will see. I am still hoping for a South Africa Match next year.

I think anywhere we go in Australia will be awesome. Using the locals recommendations is usually best.

What do you like about checkers?: I enjoy learning more and more as i go. despite its alleged simplicity the game is incredibly complex and rewarding.

For the record mate ... there have been countless state championship matches and national championships in Australia. We have had checkers authors and international champions ....we have also had some of the scottish great players of the 1890's -1910's visit and tour Australia whilst doing exhibitions and matches.... unfortunately the game died out in the 1960's ...(blame tv if you'd like) and since then there has been no official national championship to speak of. ... i have been flirting with the idea of starting a confederation but it is a lot more hard work than i can put in... i have canned the idea for now due to family commitments and the rudeness of the players i have encountered here.

Just because there are no strong players (that we know of) in Australia now... it does not mean we are not a checker nation.... most commonwealth nations are checkers nations.... or they were at some stage.

cheers :)

Michael ... i haven't gone to the Australian Open in a few years.... but it is a wonderful experience... Melbourne is a lively city and it is never more alive than whilst the Aussie Open is going. ... i will send you a few suggestions of the things i like around Melbourne and the rest of the country. I am very partial to Queensland which is where i live but wherever you go in Oz you will enjoy it because it is very exotic and different to other parts of the world. ... i will post a few suggestions soon (hopefully i won't forget to do so soon)

I think coming here in summer is the best... it will be hot but it is the best time to see OZ in all its glory :)

cheers
