Kingsrow update, free 10-piece db

Post by Ed Gilbert »

Hi All,

It's been a while since I did much work on English checkers. But I hurt my foot a few months ago and was unable to walk without crutches for a while, so I decided to do some of the checkers projects that I had been putting off. I re-compressed the 10-piece db using better compression techniques to a smaller size. It used to be 214gb, and now it is 102gb. It's small enough that it can be hosted on a file server. You will find links to download it at the kingsrow web page. It takes a while to download. On a good day it takes me a few hours, but sometimes it will take a day or longer. There are a lot of large files, so it's a bit of a PITA, but it's free :-)

I re-built most of the opening book using a fast modern computer and the 10pc db. It should be more accurate now than before. Thanks to everyone that sent me corrections in the past, particularly Jim Loy and Alex Moiseyev who each sent me several important corrections. I also merged the data from the auxiliary 'book10' opening book file into the standard book.

I also fixed some bugs in CheckerBoard. You will find links to install the newest version at the kingsrow page.

For you Italian draughts players, I built a full 10-piece db for this game. It took only 2-1/2 months using a single workstation. When I built the English 10pc db in 2005 it took almost a full year using 4 and sometimes 5 computers. New versions of kingsrow for Italian draughts, with a new opening book, and links to download the full Italian 10pc db are at the kingsrow Italian web page.

Ed, thanks a lot for your terrific work and service. I will try English Draughts KR new opening book, new CheckersBoard and new 10 pieces db (It may help me to save some gb's on my comp) after ACF 3-moves National at the end of July. In addition - 8 pieces db for 10x10 will be very helpful for all my compositional work.

Jim Loy contribution for correction English Draughts opening book was bigger indeed, but I also can be proud of the fact that I was able on two occasions to beat best Kingsrow play and this was fixed. I seriously doubt if there are any more hiding losses but ... you never know :D On one occasion I suggested Ed to adjust a little bit algorithm to reconsider evaluation of specific type position, and after a lot of testing he accepted my proposal which improved program performance.

Hi Sune,

I had a similar experience with another file about 6 months ago. I emailed Mega support and they told me, "Apologies for the inconvenience. We had a scheduled system maintenance thats why you are getting that error message. Please try again in the next 12 hours. You should be able to download your files by that time."

The problem did go away as they said it would, but it sounded fishy to me, and I wonder if it would have gotten fixed if I hadn't complained. Anyway, I will write to them again now and ask them to fix it.

Edit: Mega reports that the problem has now been fixed.

Ed Thanks For this :).

If we only had an 11 Piece Database I'd like to give the Dixon Position a go.

It's in a few books Sune but one that springs to mind is Boland's Checkers In Depth although Ryan mentions it in a few of his books as well.

See Bolands Checkers in Depth Page 83

22-17* (22-18 loses) 11-15 20-16 15-24 16-11 24-28 11-7 28-32 7-2 12-16 2-7 16-20 7-11 20-24 23-19 14-18 11-7 10-15 19-10 32-27 17-14 27-23 21-17 Draw

Their is a lot of attacks in this so I just wouldn't be 100% on it's soundness but its still a good one to know. I can think of a few ways this can be reached from play also.

Have fun Analyzing.

Regards,
Shane

An interesting position, Kingsrow has no problems analyzing this though it is clearly a draw.

Thanks Sune.

Is that via white going 2-6 straight away after crowning on square 2 or the same solution as above.

Great to see the 10-piece go into wide availability. I've been using the compact version recently and acquired a small separate SSD to put it on. That cuts the loading time by a huge factor (down to maybe 10 seconds on my current workstation).

And I'm pleased to say that using Wine, everything runs 100% correctly with no loss of speed on my Linux installation. No need to suffer the agonies of Windows.[1]

The download from Mega takes a while for sure (it took me nearly a day) but it is well worth the effort, which only has to be done once.

[1] Unrelated, but with the availability now of quite decent OCR for Linux, my last reason for having a Windows partition has gone away. Hoorah!

We bought new computer few days ago and I just finished downloading and installation new versions of Kingsrow English Draughts with 10 pieces Ending Database and Kingsrow International with 8 pieces Ending Database.

Very good improvement to both products, really enjoyed everything. Many thanks to Ed Gilbert and my wife for wonderful Christmas gift ! :bigsmurf: :D :drunken:
