New Ratings Pages (Beta)

Post by clintolsen »

I have been working on the new rating pages for a few months in my spare time. Here's a summary of what has been completed so far with some example links:

Ratings List - http://www.usacheckers.com/ratings/index.php
- Automatically includes players who have played in the 3 years prior to the current year (in this case, 2015-2018)
- Ratings list is fully sortable and searchable using any column (you can even search country names like Italy)
- Current champions have a trophy icon next to their names (you can hover your mouse over each icon to see what title they hold)
- New ACF Titles are listed in the Title column. Please don't yell at me if you don't agree with the titles as I was not involved in who should get what title
- Names are now listed using Lastname, Firstname format. I wrote a script to do the bulk of this renaming, so it's possible there are a few users whose names I have screwed up - if so let me know!
- I've assigned a country to all active players, and most inactive players, because I think it looks cool. It's very possible that I have assigned the wrong country to some players as I had to do a lot of educated guessses to do this - if so, please let me know and I'll correct them

Player Details Page - Example: Michelle Borghetti
- If you click on a player from the Ratings list or Inactive Players list you are presented with a player profile, World Ranking (if active), Country Ranking (if active), a list of any titles currently held by that player (ex. Go As You Please (GAYP) World Champion - Men) as well as a list of all tournaments played by that player
- Tournament list includes the player's rating at the end of the tournament along with the rating increase or decrease from that tournament
- Tournament list now includes the player's performance rating, which measures how well that player performed in the tournament (see Performance Rating section at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system for details on how this is calculated
- There's an icon at the end of each row in the Tournament Results table that shows you round by round results for this player in that tournament

Rated Tournaments List - http://www.usacheckers.com/ratings/tournaments.php
- I've renamed most tournaments so that they are named consistently and where possible I've avoided the use of acronyms for states, etc, to make this a bit more user friendly for non US members
- I've assigned countries for all tournaments
- There are a handful of tournaments that will not show up in this list but do appear on the old ratings website. This is because those tournaments were missing data and I could not successfully import them into a new database.

Tournament Details Page - Example: 2017 ACF 11-Man Ballot - Masters
- Clicking on a tournament link from the Rated Tournaments List or from the Player Details page displays the tournament details page
- You can hover over any cell in the Scoresheet table to see who that game was against (ex. Hovering over 6T2 in the Holmes, Michael / Rnd 1 cell shows you that Michael Holmes was playing Alex Moiseyev in the first round)
- Again, any column of any table is sortable and searchable
- All player names link to the Player Details page

Reports
- For fun, I've added a few reports: Most Active Players - Past 12 Months and Best Performances - Past 12 Months
- Note that Past 12 months means 12 months prior to the most recent tournament in the database, so because there have been no rating updates in a while these include results from early 2016.
- I'm probably going to add more reports soon (ex. Biggest Rating Increases - Past 12 Months)
- Once I have finished the ratings processing scripts I will try and add monthly or quarterly ratings lists similar to what they do for chess here https://ratings.fide.com/toplist.phtml

Behind the Scenes
- Most people won't care about this, but I've also created some admin pages so that others on the executive committee can help to manage player, tournament, title, and champion data

Please note that these pages are NOT finished yet. For the most part everything should be working but there are some usability improvements to make. However, despite not being completely finished I would like people to check out the pages and provide feedback / report bugs.

I am going to try to get the ratings processing scripts completed in the next 4-8 weeks and update everyone's ratings, which I'm sure is what you all really want, but it's not a simple task and my motivation to write code after writing code all day at work is not always so high.

I'll update the Ratings link in the ACF site menu in a week or two once I've worked through any bugs/issues.

Thank you Clint for all your hard work putting this together. It looks fantastic.

Alex M and I devised a system on assigning ACF titles (GM, Master, Expert) to ACF members. You will notice some of the higher rated players not assigned these titles and that is because they are not ACF members. In the meantime, I will check our current ACF members list and determine if any other players can be added a title. I do believe our list is pretty up to date though.

Just to make it clear again ... all these titles are newly implemented ACF titles. They have nothing to do with WCDF titles.

If I am not mistaken, last appointed WCDF GM was Matteo Bernini, Italy who was awarded by GM title several years ago.

WCDF also have IM - International Master title, and CM - Candidate of Masters.

Only players who get at least one norm in ACF events, can get ACF title. William didn't play yet in ACF events in the past decade (at least), however if rumors are true - he is coming to Las Vegas!

A quick update on my progress....

I'm building up the ACF website so that tournament directors (must have a working ACF forum account and be granted access) can submit tournament results directly, rather than going through a ratings processor to input manually which I'm sure you all will agree is a lot of work for one person. Once submitted, an approval request will be sent to one or more approvers who will review / edit the details (ex. Checking tournament names / location names for consistency) and then approve/deny the request. Once approved, tournaments will be automatically processed for ratings on the 1st day of the following month. Most of this work is done, but it's going to take me a few more weeks to finish everything and test.

So far, each tournament takes about 15 minutes to create, enter results and then submit. So far I've input results (this does not mean ratings are updated yet) for the following tournaments:
  • 2017 North Carolina & District 4 Open - Masters
    2017 Texas State & District 8 Open
    2017 Canadian Championship Match
    2017 Southern Open
2017 GAYP World Qualifier - Men
2017 GAYP World Qualifier - Women
    2017 Youth GAYP WCM
    2017 Arkansas State Open
    2017 3-Move WCM
    2017 Virginia State Open
    2017 Ohio State Open
    2017 Illinois 101 Counties Open - Class A
    2017 Illinois 101 Counties Open - Class B
    2017 Kentucky Open
    2017 Alabama State & Discrict 5 Open
    2018 Illinois State Open - Class A
    2018 Illinois State Open - Class B
If you do not see your tournament in this list, it's because I can't find proper cross-tables for the tournament - Please kindly send these my way if you have them for any tournament not in the list above. I am not going to process the updated ratings until the list of missing results gets a bit smaller.

I have cross-tables for the 2017 New England States & District 1 Open tournament but I need to update my scripts to support 2-point rounds before I can enter it.

Here's the ACF tournaments I noticed that had no cross-tables, or invalid cross-tables:
  • 2017 Missouri State 3-Move Open (no cross-table)
    2017 Barbados Open (no cross-table)
2017 Pete Schmucker's Checker Meet (Invalid cross-table - need round by round results)
    2017 GAYP Nationals (no cross-table)
2017 Mid-Ohio Checker Meet (Invalid cross-table - need round by round results)
2017 Youth GAYP WCM (Zaitseva vs Holmes) (no cross-table)
2018 Tennessee State Open (no cross-table)
If you know of any other tournaments that are missing, please let me know.

Nice work now you can add Barbados open 2017.

I'm going to be processing ratings as a test today. There's a good chance this doesn't work the first time, so if any pages are broken they'll be fixed this weekend. Please note that these new ratings will NOT be official as there are still some key tournaments missing (ex. 2017 GAYP nationals). I will re-process the ratings once those missing tournaments are in, in the correct order.

Well ... we have USA vs Italy match (April 21-25, 2018) where I and other good fellows from both teams attended. I hope Match Main Referee Ingo Zachos (Germany) submit you technical results.

I also hope if TN 2018 results (where I played) will be submitted to you by JR.
