'The name of the game in English-speaking countries was originally Checkers,, …, and subsequently Draughts, ...' From David Parlett's excellent 'History of Board Games'. This has just been republished and is an excellent book.

I have a friend who is a historian (mostly of the Church of England since the Oxford Movement) and has spent long periods of the last 45 years in Britain. I found out last week he had no idea that checkers is called draughts there, and in most other places, too.
