Checker Maven 15 years

Post by chipschap »

Aloha everyone,

With tomorrow's column (December 7, 2019) the Checker Maven marks 15 years of continuous on-time publication with never a missed issue.

The last fifteen years have taken me through retirement, a major relocation, and two rounds of cancer including major loss of vision. I had planned to stop first after 10 years, and then 15, but I now plan to carry on as long as I'm physically able. I can't guess how long that might be, but I'm hoping to have a number of good years left to me.

In my weekly columns, I've written and presented more checker fiction than everyone else in the history of the game put together. Marvin J. Mavin, Uncle Ben and Tommy, Sal Westerman and others have made repeat appearances, and there have been serialized stories and more. I've published problems and studies new and old, reissued new editions of classic checker books, and have been privileged to be the editor and publisher for Richard Pask's amazing work. I've tried to maintain a literate and erudite tone and to write and publish to a high professional standard.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to have put checkers in front of thousands of weekly readers for so long a time. None of this would have been possible without the support and encouragement of checker fans from all around the world (although the Space Station and Antarctica still haven't checked in).

Mahalo to everyone out there. You've made the Checker Maven into something special.

Bob, congratulations on 5+5+5 years of Unofficial Goodwill Ambassadorship for Checkers,...and America!

In the interest of full disclosure, I did NOT solve this week's problem from !5th Anniversary 12/07/19.

At the end of the column you write "If there's anything you'd especially like to see, please let us know!"

I would especially like to see more of the World of Marvin J. Marvin. :)

In the meantime, I really like the floor of the Beacon Cafe!
