What is sport ?

This is a wonderful mistake, which very well reflects a treatment of checkers    I always thought checkers - is a sport but opening a new session "SPORT" puts them on different sides of barricades

Sport

Post by Alan Millhone »

Hello Mr. Alex:

This topic could also include good 'sport' s manship !

To me Checkers/Draughts is one of the most elegant mind 'sports' ever conceived by man.

Ahh... perhaps i should have been more clear, how about
"Other Sports"

I kind of thought with the super bowl just ending, the olympics just starting, and the world cup coming later this year that a lot of people wouldn't mind discussing them.

Well, sports is competition, it is not something necessarily connected with physical activity as most people and even the IOC believes.
To me a Sport is a Competition in which fairness and a set of rules determine and guaranteee equal chances for all, so that only skill, expirierence and charakter features help you, not social status, money or race or politics.

That is why, to me, "Olympic" Sports or most "professional" Sports
are indeed comercial activities (Business smd Entertainment), no sportsmanship or fair play is intended, indeed you will be rewarded if you take all unfair advantages.

If you mean this kind of Sport by Sport I won't accept that Chess, Checkers, Go, Recersi, etc. are Sports, although some in the Chess World behave like it were that kind of Sport.

In a book, former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter, refers to:

"...checker players and other loafers..."

I realize I am answering a very old thread, but I feel I should point out that in some countries chess and checkers are organized by the ministry of sports. In fact, it is difficult to come up with a definition of sport not specifically intended to exclude board games that will leave them out.

If one equates sports with athletics, then how do we see target shooting (a sport that had the oldest olympian ever participating in the early XXth Century) as a sport. Or golf, or any of a number of competitions?

If we say, sport requires physical activbity, we should not forget that the brain is also an essential part of the body (try to remove or transplant).
Indeed it needs more energy if used extensively then any other organ in our body.
To train it and to use it to show skill in a competive game is sport, what else could it be ?

Checkers is not a sport. It's a board game. There's no neutral category - Monopoly is a board game, would you call it a sport? What about Candy Land?

The main criteria of sport definition is - competition. Checkers meet this criteria.

If you have other and better definitions - please, provide them here.

Also, if you play blundfold checkers - you don't need a board.

Harm Wiersma, former 10x10 World Champion, performed a duties of sport minister in Netherland for at least 1 term !

In Russia checkers belong to the Sport Department
