Greetings All,
I have found a copy of a B&W photo of Sam Gonotsky-Mike Lieber, that I thought I would share. I had originally posted that this was taken during their 40 game match...but it was not. Their 40 game match was played in New York, this photo was taken outside of the home of Mr. Pennell, who is standing on the far right. This is in Flint, Michigan.


It has recently come to my attention that some of the images in some of my posts are showing up on some screens with a portion of the image cropped off. Usually on the right side.
The above image should have a 1/4 " white border around the entire image.....if you do not see this border around the entire image, then it is being cropped. ( I have always seen everyone of my posts perfectly on my PC)
PLEASE let me know via PM, or by replying to this post if you are not seeing the complete image (i.e., with a 1/4 " white border)
With the help of Liam Stephens, I believe I may have figured out what the problem is, and it might be with photobucket.....but, I will not know UNLESS YOU LET ME KNOW !( As I see all of my posts perfectly, and I am trying different settings in an attempt to correct this problem )

A well-known position from the 9-14, 23-19, 11-15, opening. I think Chamblee had this with Tinsley in their match if memory serves me right. What a great photograph.

I found this photo among Earl Hangen's items. It is a copy of a photo that was sent to Earl by , I believe, Mr. Roy Davies, for use in his Wood's Ladder Report.
It is at the home of Floyd Penell, pictured in the photo.
During the late 1920's, a whole group of players (some of the above,standing Charles Hollow, Nathan Matus, Maurice Seavey, Floyd Pennell, seated Mike Lieber, John Mclaughlin,E.J.Rees, Sam Gonotsky, among others) lived with Pennell....this was snapped during this time period.
There is alot of info on this in Nathan Matus's excellent "Ghosts Of The Past" series that appeared in print in the ECB Ladder Letter....I believe this series was also run in another publication....but it is escaping me at the moment.

As far as the position....any idea what the terms are..?

I think last moves were 31-27, 3-7. If, instead 31-27, white would play 18-15 - they would get into famous shot

Hi Jay,

Some stats:

At the diagram stage, M.Tinsley played 26-22 v M.Chamblee in their 1947 match and A.Long played 18-15 v L.Ginsberg in 1922 US Nat Ty.

The earlier 18-15 loss referred to by Alex, was played by the late Elbert Lowder v Tom Watson in 1973 GB v USA match and Willie Gardner had 3 wins against that move in the 1907 English Ty. It is an old win by Drummond.

I was a seventeen-year-old onlooker as Elbert played into the shot . I can see the joy on Tom Watson's face even now, almost thirty-five years later. I can also see you now Liam, seated near Asa Long as the great man was about to defeat the former British champion Ivor Edwards (not related). Wonderful memories.

Yes Lindus, brings back many happy memories. A highlight for me was meeting the genial Walter Hellman who recounted the experiences of his life and times in the USA. I particularly remember him discussing Willie Ryan and the article that Ryan wrote,( I think it was in his Modern Ency) where he called himself Temoc and others by various nicknames and generally made fun of the establishment.
Certainly, Walter found that article highly amusing. The sad thing as I recall, was that his health was not good at that time and he had to return home midway through the match.

Gentlemen,
You never cease to amaze me.....
There may be no major sponsors for the game, maybe membership to national organizations is down, perhaps there are not as many "Grandmasters" today as there were at other times during the games history.

Regardless, it is things like this....like this post generating a response from the current World Champion (Alex), and insights into the history of a position ( and personal recollections !!) by such esteemed Checkerists as Liam and Lindus, that make this an INCREDIBLE time to be a part of the game !!!

I have stated it before and I will state it again....it is a pleasure, and an honor, to be here !!!!

According to a letter from Sam's brother, my grandfather, Morris Gardner, "My recollection is that the 40 game match with Lieber was played in Flint, Mich. -- not Long Island -- even though the book on the game, which I have, says that it was played at the Garden City Hotel in L. I. Joseph Lannin, who owned the hotel, sponsored the match. He was a great checker lover, and at one time Sam lived at the hotel for a while."

Most interesting info.....perhaps Morris was referring to the secene of this photo (??)....maybe this was from a match in Flint. In fact, there is mention of many a small match played at Pennell's home between the players who stayed there at that time.
Either way, there was indeed a 40 game match between Lieber and Gonotsky in Garden City.
This match was given extensive coverage in American Checker Monthly, Jan. 1928 cover dated.
"No match was ever staged in more exquisite surroundings than this one at genial Joe Lanin's palatial hostelry in Garden City....he even took care of Lieber's traveling expenses....." ...just a few of the passages directly from the article.
Didn't I read sometime back that a famliy member has Gonotsky's trophies......? any interest in showing these if possible...?

Yes, seeing your grandfather's name jogs my memory.....
I believe it was mentioned by Sherman Gardner in correspondence to Earl Hangen that these trophies remain in the family.....
If you can find these and snap some photos, these would look very good exhibited at the Online Museum Of Checkers History.....
