Copyright Questions

Does anyone know if ketchum's handy manual #2 is still in copyright? I've got part 2 the cross and I'd like to start converting it to PDN. I don't see any copyright notice in the book at all, but it might be a reproduction.

Also my copy of Doran's old 14th has a copyright date in 1936. If i understand correctly this is in public domain if the the copyright was never renewed (based on the information from this page http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm).... but how to I check that?
