Original Kears and Original Lees guide!

Ive just came on an original Ency of Draughts[Kears] revised edition and an orginal Lees Guide to the Game of Draughts (Checkers),pocket size 6"x4" hard back,it says reprinted in 1937 London, are these of any importance or value?


I also have the Fourth Correspondence booklet WCM of Huggins [GB]v R.E.Chamberlain [AUS] originally published by the E.D.A.There is a picture inside it but i dunno if its Huggins or Chamberlain,...i know someone was lookin a photo of Chamberlain!

In 1965 a new Draughts Column commenced, weekly, in the Ipswich Advertiser. The editor was a former Queensland champion.
What was his name ?

Your Kears Ency might be valuable, if it contains all 7 parts bound in a single book. The complete work was made available in 1928 (3rd Edition) and 1950 (4th Edition) as a single cloth bound book. The 4th Edition may fetch a high price.

Copies of Lees' Guide, unfortunately, are mostly 2 a penny !

Hmmm thanks Liam.....................the Lees Guide im referring to is very unlike what id describe as the USUAL Less Guide which i also have.It is a much bigger book...yes?

As for The Ency ...it says on the Supplement booklet.........."only a few sets were made (the seven Volumes and Supplement supplement 520 pages) have been made up in a good cloth binding. J.Alexander


It look s like like 7 volumes put together as there is problems pages after each opening mid stream altho i can only see the remnants of of where one of the individual paper covers might have been. It does state it is a 3rd Edition.[revised]

Hi Tommy,

I have never come across a copy of Lees' Guide that is larger than the usual size. Might be one of those reprints by Don Goodwin or others ?
I have about half a dozen editions, including the 1937 Edition, but all measure about 4" by 6 and a half ".

The 520 pages Kear is the 3rd Edition of 1928.

Tommy, its hard to know the value of your Kears but I'd guess it would fetch a good price. I have a 4th Ed (1950) and I can tell you it was purchased by the late Leo Mc Gurk during his visit to the 3rd IM 1983 from an "American book dealer". Leo paid $80.00 for it in 1983. After Leo died his son give it to me as a gift. In reality it never comes off the bookshelf as I have a working copy of the 3rd Ed (a Goodwin reprint) that suplies most things I'm looking for. Hugh
