I found another Payne's book, looks like the "A" copy discussed in the ACF forum in 2010, here is my collection of related material http://checkersusa.com/books/straight/Payne/

Jake Kacher, thank you for posting this Christmas Gift for the ACF Forum readers. What an incredible collection of and related to the first ever checkers book in English by William Payne in 1756 :!:

Thanks George, just realized that 1813 books was by Roger Payne, not William Payne, removed from the collection.
BTW, are they related?

This is a great collection!

Detailed information on Sturges is hard to come by, but when I was researching Sturges for "Mr Darcy Plays Draughts" I found the following material:

https://books.google.com/books?id=q4p9n ... rd&f=false

(Since Sturges would have been a contemporary of the Jane Austen's fictional Mr Darcy, I have a small scene in which Elizabeth and Sturges meet at the Public House that Sturges apparently ran in Hanover Yard.)

Jake, my impression in "thumbing through" the various copies of the first checkers/draoughts book in English that you posted is that Roger Payne in the 1813 edition is William Payne from 1756. The only difference I noticed is the 1813 edition does not have the dedication and preface ghost written by Samuel Johnson in the 1756 editions....Thank you for posting your Sturges collection that includes the two great books from 1800 and 1808. Wow!

I removed the Roger Payne book from the list, seems unrelated

Bob Newell's book Mr. Darcy Plays Draughts And Other Stories is for sale at Amazon, and his portrayal of Joshua Sturges I really like!

https://www.amazon.com/Darcy-Plays-Drau ... 1535303352

Joshua Sturges is no stranger to The Checker Maven webzine, this story A Midnight Enchonter (01/13/07) by "Martin" first appeared in Draughts Or Checkers For Beginners by Henry Spayth in 1866. The Checker Maven column includes solutions to the problems that were not published in the book.

The book Draughts Or Checkers For Beginners by Henry Spayth is in the Online Checkers Library.

http://checkersusa.com/books/straight/S ... s_1866.pdf

The very title of the book shows the transition for the Grand Old Game being called "Draughts" to being called "Checkers" after the American Civil War.

Just as an historical factoid, the Southern Confederate General Robert E. Lee was playing chess, while the Northern Union General Ulysses S. Grant was playing checkers. The North won the war, and that is all you have to know about chess vs checkers.

That is an incredible collection by and about the legiondary John Drumond. His annaysed games are quoted by checkers authors from Andrew Anderson and James Lees, to Richard Fortman and Richard Pask.

After 3 years I cautiously tried posting old games animation - World and USA championships, some book animation, the next day someone from Kenya used a program to steal all 26 thousands files for himself - that exceeded the monthly quote for the site and forced the shut down, so no one can benefit now at all. Thanks a lot!
