Re: TN Tourney News & Results Thread
Thanks to organisers of tournament and directors, Mary & Frank Davis, all donators and sponsors. Beautifully and lovely done as usual. I really enjoyed tournament, games, high and professsional competition. I met alot of old friends, new ones and some online friends I never met before but knew for decades !
I also want to pointer your attention to very good, exceptional performance of Justin Gober in Master Division (6th place), Wayne Gober in Major Division (1st place) and Alex Holmes in Minor Division (2nd place). All of them I beleive were debutants in their Divisions and did extremely well.
Wayne outcome, to be honest, didn't surprize me much, but Alex and Justin success was a pleasunt surprise for me and many others. Nice way to go.
I also saw a new (to me) name on the final standings list - Mike Choate who also recently joined ACF forum. I don't know much about Mike but I saw - he was in leading group in Major Division to the rest of event. Very impressive.
I am satisfy with quality of my games though I lost incidentally one game to John Webster. This fact surprised both of us but didn't seriously disappoint me - game is game and this happened with everyone. Well ... not with Jim Morrison who was the only one in Master Division in this event without losing a single game !
Prize money from Gene Lindsay Fund worked very well. It seems like trustees were smart enough and operated money and invested very well. Even today in tough economy they were able to get 3% annual return which totalled to $1,539 which were divided proportionally among 3 Divisions and everyone gets a piece.
I will post few games from this ty later.

A big Thank You to Mr.and Mrs Davis for a well run Ty.. It was great to have you back with us. To John.. thank you for all the information, updates and compliments. I can`t take all the credit for all the food though, because Natalie Marshall brought the fudge and the pies. She is a Master when it comes to pie making. Thanks Nat, so glad you and David were able to come. Also, for those that did not make it to the Sunday service... You missed a blessing. Looking forward to next year. Vonda (Bugs)

Re: TN Tourney News & Results Thread
Wow!! Our firt time to go tothe Tenn. Open and what can I say? Arrived Thurs. evening with the usual queeziness I always get prior to a tournament. Not wanting to play in the same division as Justin, neither of us could decide on what division we should play. Finally, I dectected from Justin that he really wanted to try Masters. I am so proud of his play in this tournament. You fathers understand!!
I was so happy to meet Alex in person for the first time. I am on record here and now to say he impressed me very much. How? Of course, his play is 'World Champ stuff" but I found him to possess so many fine human qualities. My esteem for him, which was already high, manifoldly increased. I'm am proud to be a friend of "The Champ" !!.
Always looking forward to John Ackers posts from tournaments has inspired me to post the following round thoughts from me. Thanks John!
Round 1:
My online friend Jonathan comes with the cards and news. We are matched first round. I soon find out he came to win. No prisoners taken from this fine young player. He took man down lines on both of our games !!! Aggressive? I'll say. Thing about it though.... I believe in aggressive play and had to do some myself later in the tournament. I hope Jonathan thinks as highly of me as I do him. Was an honor to get to play this young man and get to personalize our friendship. We will here more and more from him down the line.
Round 2:
Jeff Webster and I are paired. Had met Jeff online and played only a few games online. Solid play on a colors reversed defiance. I was very fortunate to win on an ending that tucci had beat me on at kurnick. Jeff is a fine man who I really enjoyed meeting and playing. His uncle John Is an Oklahoma State grad. and played on an Oklahoma Checker team when he went to school here. Justin and I were paired up with the Websters in the same round. I had Jeff, Justin had John. Them Websters are good folk!
Day 2
Woke up with 6 points after two rounds and I am behind the leaders.
Round 3:
My opponent is a longtime sparring parter from online Byron Woolum. I need points. I am behind. So late midgame I go into a 3 for 1. I am so blinded to it that I never see it until Byron pulls the trigger !! He looke for quite a while thinking there must be something going on here. Game 2 of round is a draw. So much for catching up. Byron only loss I had in tourney though John Acker had me dead to rights. But that story for later lol.
Round 4:
Now I really need some points. My hopes are fading fast for a good finish in this tournament.
I am paired with Lamar. Card produces 9-14, 22-18 , 5-9. Lamar says " Gayp and laughs" Just great, he know this opening.I have little chance of getting points here I fear. Lamar plays pp right down to the end and makes a very small mistake allowing me a win. Wow that was lucky. Because of his confusion on that ending which was only one move off, I play the same line to the same ending. Both sides can lose the ending easily. Lucky Dog, I am. I get another win at the expense of Lamar who I am sure has known this play for years but he just forgot a fine detail at the end. He is of course a good sport, but we all know how losses hurt.
Round 5:
Justin is proving he belongs in the Masters even though he lost the last round to Alex. His goal was to get to play him. He made a fine recovery in round 5 that got him back in the mix. Can you tell that I am a pround Dad?? Buttons about to pop off my shirt as my son is proving He belongs in the Master Class. my opponent this round is Arther Mays. We have two uneventful draws, which doesn't help the point situation.
By the way, Arthur was one of our favorites at the tournament. What a great guy this man is.
Round 6:
John Acker and the old Okie are matched. I got better aquainted with John this tournament. I am very impressed with this fine young player onb so many levels. He loves checkers and his posts have always been something I look forward to. Between rounds, late at night ect. I found John on his laptap sending out news ! Thanks John. I sure hope our friendship has been further solidified as I hold you in high esteem. John had me beat in a game but I had one of his men in the doghole and edged out a cheap drw. Did John cry over it? No way he laughed about it and went on to a high finish in the tournament. He is a true Champ in my mind. You impressed me on how you handled that lost win John.
Day 3
Round 7:
At the expensive of my friend John Acker, I am one point behind the leader and paired with Mr. Mike Choate. My fate is in my hands. I need a win here. We draw 11-15, 24-20, 12-16. YES!! An opening that I might get a win with. However, I had the weak side first and Mr. Choate had ideas of getting a win here too. I was extremely worried with my midgame and could not find a good way that looked like it would drw.
A glimmer of hope, an unnatural trade may get me to a more even position. I look a long time. Yes, the trade, which I can't see all of the later details is my best chance and leads to a draw. My opponent congrads me on narrow draw , WHEW. 2nd game I vary but still strong attack and win a game. Mission accomplished. Caught the leaders finally and took lead by one point. Mike is fairly new to tournament checkers and I think this was only his 3rd or 4th tournament ever. Boy am I glad of that as he was all I could handle
Round 8:
Paired with my friend and friend of many Teal Stanley. I am only one point ahead of Teal and 3 other players. No sure thing and I need a win.
10-14, 24-19, 6-10, 22-18, 11-15,xx, 28-19, 4-8, 25-22, 8-11,22-18, 11-16, 18-15, 1-6 and I have the reds on a Banks Jordan pp line. I decide to get aggressive and try a gambit. I pitch 21-17 and head for kings row. The move was taken crossboard without previous knowledge. I have yet to dertimine its merit but it won the Majors for me as the next game I simplified as rapidly as possible to an uneventful draw. Teal is my buddy and this knocked him down a bit in the final standings but He stands high with me as a friend and player
My thoughts and hope this isn't too long a post..

Re: TN Tourney News & Results Thread
It was a great tournament this year. Everyone came to play hard . I enjoyed every second of it. Wayne, It was a pleasure to finally meet you and Justin. I hope he plays some more. Im upset with my play in the 8th round with Acker. I went back over the game and found a easy win on a move I was looking at for about 10 minutes LOL. That woulda put me tie for 1st with you Wayne
. Oh well, theres always next year. I hope everyone had a good time and I am going to see about organizing the Florida Tournament next year. I will get lots of donations for prize money to make it a HUGE tournament. Good seeing everyone!

I would like to congratulate all those who participated in the Tennessee Tournament. As I am new to tournament play, it has been a true joy to get to meet such a nice group of men and women and to see the faces of so many that I have played with on-line over the years. My congratulations to Mr. Wayne Gober for winning the majors division in which I played. To everyone in that division I say, "Thanks for the lessons". My congratulations also to the other division winners.

Re: TN Tourney News & Results Thread
I concur with Mike's comments, I enjoyed the tournament and my wife enjoyed the outlets! It was great meeting so many folks that I had played on kurnik, I still prefer good old face to face checkers over the net, but the net is a great thing when players live so far apart.
