Hi John,

It is a pity that you are not able to attend the Welsh Open as you would be given a very warm welcome indeed. I have the highest admiration for you as a person and as a player. The work you are doing for checkers is appreciated by so many. If you did play in the Welsh Open you would win it by a country mile.

I was overjoyed to hear that Shane took the title and wish to offer him my congratulations on a truly outstanding performance. Well done Shane. You truly are a grandmaster of the highest order. You play moves I could only dream of making.

To answer your question Tommy on who was the youngest British Open Champion, that surely must be Shane :D

Best wishes to all,

Lindus.

I am eager to see some fine games from winner and others. Congratulations to all who contributed to Shane victory.

I am sure Tommy Watson will be back soon with full arms and hope to see him in the upcoming International USA vs UK & I.

Good lcuk to all ! One tournament is over, another (QT) - on the way. As a reigning champion I would like to see the strongest overturn and still hope William can make it "last second" - due to time availability and finances.

Good evening Alex

all of this suspense has made me hungry after following the British closely for a week from my armchair , however as I stated before I have not looked at a board or book since December ,when I started my Prep course for engineering school. I will not be back to ty play till middle of 2012 when school is over ( and i have set out to keep all books closed till after school) , this is a personal professional project that i set myself over 1 year ago , and is also the reason why i could not come to play in US nat and also 11 man ballot title against you.

it is tough for me just to sit on and "watch " or listen to history being made and not be part of it , but I am only 43 and for the moment time is still on my side ! perhaps ! maybe ! I hope!! :? :? :?

Happy playing to everyone

Congratulations to Shane on a great performance. We're all very proud of him. The fact that he agreed some drawn results in later rounds suggests he wasn't out to set any records, just do enough to get there.

On an earlier query Shane was born in May 1987 which makes him 23 years old. Leonard Claxton was 22 years old when he won it back in 1934. Hugh.

Hugh, thanks for historical research. Who was an oldest winner of British Open ?

If I am not mistaken I think it was also that record breaking man Asa Long ... to be confirmed though

I believe Mr Devlin is correct in saying that Asa Long was the oldest winner of the British Open. I think he was about 85 years of age at the time.

My late father was eighty years of age when he won the event, ahead of grandmasters Pat McCarthy, Tom Watson and Jimmy Grant.

It is nice to have the luxury of an unassailable lead on the final day of a major tournament as Shane did as he was then able to offer draws as I did on the final day of the English Open last year. But the English Open is a far cry from any other event contested in Great Britain of course and I am not making any comparison with Shane's magnificent victory. Just reflecting for a moment on how nice an unassailable lead is :) Ron King, as I recall, had many such luxuries.

I will have to check my records to see if Asa was the oldest winner of the British Open.

Upon checking my records I discovered that Asa Long was 80 years of age when he won the British Open. My late father was eighty years and seven months when he won the said title. I am quite sure therefore that my father holds the record for this event so far as age is concerned.

Great posts.

That's Asa Long from Toledo, Ohio...another fine Ohio lad who, along with Orville and Wibur Wright, Ulysses Grant, and Thomas Edison (amongst many others) broke through the limits of the possible.

Gary,
You forgot to mention Ohioans Marion Tinsley, Louis Cowie, Gary Jenkins, and many in between.

Indeed I did...my oversight. I guess I was trying for diversity of talent, not only checkers. It is worth mentioning, however, that Grant and Edison were both checker players...I don't know about Orville and Wilbur but they may have done...it would have been characteristic of them and, as analytical as they were, they would have, no doubt, been good.

But Asa Long, ahhhhh, what a player!

(I guess I've pulled this thread far off topic...sorry...).

Hey Guys,

Thanks Everybody for the warm congratulations it's very much apreciated.

To William and Lindus Im sure that you all would have something to say and I wouldnt have gotten as big a score
had you guys been there 8) .

I must say that its great to have in my possession (temporary of course :) ) the British Open Shield
which is steeped in so much history and now the only difficult decision left to make is weither to put
my name next to Rawle Allicock or Mustafa Durdyev (any ideas? or flip a coin?).

Its certainly been an awsome week and one which I will always remember through out my career in checkers.

Regards,

Shane McCosker
