The computer said it was an equal position until he made the blunder at the end.

John, this is not a blunder. Sergio had many times chance to make an error and passed successfully all of them except one. Ron hold his two mans on 4 and 5 and tried to make all Kings. This is "strategical play", not "tactical" and we know Ron great ability and skills in edning phase.

I saw a tons of such "obviously drawn" positions where Ron scored a wins. As soon as this ending occured in game, I predicted in chatroom a hard work for Sergio and extremely cautious play.

This is an excellent victory of champion, who is older then challenger by more than 30 years ! Isn't amazing ?

Perhaps it's a bit earlier for title to change hands ? :D

Sorry, it isn't first position because the Black man on 5 can move!

I agree completely, people always talk about that one move where they blew it or lost it, but they never talk about the 40 or 50 moves that kept them from losing before it. It was a mistake by Sergio that he could have possibly avoided, but Ron put him in a tough game situation, you have to give him credit.

I have lost 1000's of games in my lifetime and in everyone one of them I made a blunder at some point or another.

it sounds that this World Championship has been quite exciting.... i am sad i only witnessed the very first game and nothing else.... but with the weekend upon me i am hoping to watch what is left of it...

haven't had time to have a look at the wins or the analysis that all you guys are offering... something that a novice like myself deeply appreciates.

cheers

Score after after 18 games:

Ron King (Barbados) 2
Sergio Scarpetta (Italy)1

Drawn 15

as there were hours left in the morning sessions, game 19 already started. Ron King went into a known pp-loss and fights an ending a clear man down now.

A terribly played 19th game ended in a draw after Ron went into a known pp-loss a man down in worse position.

But Sergio missed a few very easy wins and finally blundered away his extra piece in what was not even a trap set by Ron, but a kind of self-mate in checkers.
He then was lucky to escape into a draw himself, and now the score is:

Ron King 2
Sergio Scarpetta 1

Drawn 16

5 games to go.

I am very surprised of how well Sergio bounced back. He has the momentum and advantage now.
