Re: VA Open 2012.
If enuff masters show up (6 or more) will VA plan to have a 2 class tourney? Players like me prefer a Class B so that we have a chance to win a few too!!

Separtate Division can be setup if we have at least 6 players IN EACH division. If we have 6 masters + yourself ... sorryneilwenberg wrote:If enuff masters show up (6 or more) will VA plan to have a 2 class tourney? Players like me prefer a Class B so that we have a chance to win a few too!!

To all,
Just wanted to wish you guys playing the best of luck. I will not be able to make it. Unfortunately as of right now, I am up to my ears in research that I have to publish in a few months. Money has been a little tight also because my wife retired from the Navy recently and is going to law school. Not to mention I have a Battalion to lead of over 300+ of the finest Sailors and Marines. Next year will be much better for me! I miss everyone and can't wait to get back. Again, good luck!

Re: VA Open 2012.
I've got 27 points (out of 32), Ryan Pronk, new VA State Champion - 21 points and 2nd place. 1st price was $70 (three $20 bills and one $10).
10 facts:
1) On Friday night I had a nice dinner at Liberty Station (former Railroad Station) in fancy restaurant.
2) 2 copies of Sixth were sold during the tournament.
3) I saw several new (to me) players.
4) it was a nice article in local newspaper, where they quoted me:
"Some people do fishing, other hunting, I play checkers !"
What is common for these 3 activities ? All of them are not the way making a living money and all of them are life hobby.
Article is here:

5) Anyway, I want to thank everyone who made me a complimentary room.
6) Bill Salot delivered problem he promised. Actually it was just one interesting idea but handling in 6 different ways, so - there were 6 problems in reality ! Me and John Webster by working hard for 10 miutes solved 5 of them and 1st round started.
7) I also felt almost like celebrity when hotel owner and his wife asked me to make a picture with them and sign newspaper.
8 ) The most exciting thing I enjoyed and loved in Bedford and VA - four tiny hot dogs and cup of coffeee cost me only $5. Hence, I wish I have job in New York and live in VA (or WV) !
9) Ryan Pronk kindly agreed to travel to Europe on his own if he would be selected on American team
10) I had a great time, thanks folks !!!
Respectfully,
winner of VA State tourney,
captain of American team

Re: VA Open 2012.
I would like to add that the tournament was a success from the Virginia perspective. Young Virginia residents in their 20s won 3rd and 4th places. Only Alex M. and John Webster did better. I say special congratulations to Ryan Pronk and Travis Weddle! The vast majority of contestants could not handle them.
Later I'll post the 6-problem Virginia Tournament puzzle in the Positions section of this Forum.

Thanks, Bill. You did great as well and taught me a few things! The Virginia boys rounded out the top five! We all should thank Buck for organizing the tournament -- that is no easy task.Bill Salot wrote:I would like to add that the tournament was a success from the Virginia perspective. Alex, I'm glad you were able to attend and it was great to meet you and play in person. I do expect to do some deep study on the Fife in the near future

Re: VA Open 2012.
An excellent tournament, well run by "Buck" Smith. 18 players, I felt bad that Bill Stanley was not able to play as last tournament Bill and I played in he won one and we drew the other and I was hoping to return the favor. Hope and Pray that Bill feels well enuff to compete in District 4 in November. I was happy to finish in tenth place with honor points, winning 6, losing 6, and drawing 4. Alos a win ove Bill M and a win over Bobby Gerringer and two draws with Raleigh Johnson were the best I had ever done with those fine players.
