Below is the link to watch the live streaming of the games of the World Championship match in GAYP 2014:

GM Ron King (Barbados) - GM Sergio Scarpetta (Italy):

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/king-scarpetta

Both players already played a tied World Championship match (+2, -2, = 20) in 2012.

http://www.manghisi.it//Export/HTM/MATC ... RPETTA.htm

Ron King is undefeated World Champion in GAYP since 1991.
Sergio Scarpetta won the WCDF World Qualifier in Barbados in 2013 by a huge margin to qualify for his 2nd shot at the title.
http://www.nccheckers.org/NCCA/10-13-20 ... %20com.htm

Both players recently won their respective National Championships in Italy

and Barbados

and seem in good shape for a close and exciting match.

Please, correct me for any inaccuracy. Below is a full complete list of Ron's GAYP World Title matches

01. 1991, R. King vs J. Morrison, 4-1-17
02. 1992, R. King vs D. Oldbury, 5-5-14
03. 1995, R. King vs L. Lowder, 8-2-9
04. 1996, R. King vs J. Morrison, 2-0-21
05. 1998, R. King vs R. Hallett, 6-2-14
06. 2000, R. King vs A. Moiseyev, 3-3-18
10. 2008, R. King vs L. Kondlo, 1-0-23
11. 2010, R. King vs R. Beckwith, 2-1-21
12. 2012, R. King vs S. Scarpetta, 2-2-20
13. 2014, R. King vs S. Scarpetta, ????????

I am not sure 100% about dates and score in matches 2003 & 2005 R. King against J. Francis.

23 years in Champion business ! Only Chess World Champion E. Lasker hold title longer: 27 years 1894-1921, but he played less number of matches (5 I think) and also WW1 was occurred in the middle of his term. Ron needs just few more years and 3 more matches to beat this record. Can Sergio stop him ? :D

His match against Pat McCarthy was a 3-move match. Alex only refers to GAYP title matches.

The 2003 date is correct, but the second Ron King vs Jack Francis WCM was in 2006, with a score of 2-0-27.
This is listed in Richard Pask's GAYP Supplement in 21st Century Checkers: 11-15's

http://www.bobnewell.net/checkers/paskpdf.html

At the end of Day 2, Sergio Scarpetta leads 1-0-7, with 16 games to go!

They played in 1997 and it was 3-moves WTM.

Any news on why Ron did not show up the last two games? Did he quit?

Sergio Scarpetta of Italy wins the 2014 GAYP WCM 4-1-17. He joins fellow countryman Michele Borghetti at the top of the Checkers World!
Sergio is a gentleman who two years ago tied Ron King in the 2012 GAYP WCM, with Champion Ron King retaining the title. After the 2012 match
Sergio wrote:

The play is important, but other things are more important, especially the friendship. It was a great experience for me, I hope the next King's
opponent will be able to excite all of us.

That quote may be found in the ICHF 2013 Annual, page 74. Sergio's hope has certainly come true in 2014!
Congratulations to Ron King for over 20 years as the GAYP Checkers World Champion!
Congratulations to Sergio Scarpetta for reaching his goal of becoming the GAYP Checkers World Champion!

I've just caught up with the situation in Italy. This is truely shocking behaviour from Ron.

Personally Its impossible for me to believe that Ron only discovered he had a flight issue when he went a game down on day 5. Even more shocking is the fact that he failed to inform his opponent or the referee (who was an official on behalf of the WCDF) that he wouldn't be there and left them sitting for several hours the following morning not knowing what was happening. From reports it appears that they waited for more than two hours prior to starting a clock, to give Ron every opportunity to arrive, when the clocks should have been started at the schedulled starting time of those games. That says a lot about the character of the new champion, just as it also tells a lot about the character of the former champion.

This is totally unacceptable from anyone, and it projects a poor image of Checkers and checkerplayers to the attending Italian media. I could only imagine that the organised presentation ceremony was held in the shaddow of this atmosphere. If there was truely an issue about a return flight for Ron (and I cannot imagine why there should have been) then his losing share of the prize purse would have bought a flight back days later. Its truely disgraceful.

I think the WCDF should investigate the full details of this affair and take approprite actions.

Hi Hugh, thanks for your comments. I continue to gather information from all involved parties. Ron wanted his flight situation settled that morning before playing (and that is another topic how we even got here). Ron got stranded going to SportAcord in 2012 (not his fault), so perhaps he was extra apprehensive about things for this reason. Anyway, they discussed as a group for a while and got a plan in motion to address his flight concerns by later that day, although Ron seemed to want something more concrete in hand immediately. Ezio could not delay the match indefinitely due to room availability, return flights the next day, etc. and announced to the players he would resume the match, but apparently Ron refused to play.
