Well, the World Champion beats his next challenger. Could hardly be more exciting then that.

However, there are still four more rounds to be played.

Alex still undefeated on Chinese ground since 2008.

Can he obtain his next great triumph?

And can Lubabalo fight back as he did last year, when he defeated Miki in the play-off for the silver medal?

And will Sergio find a way to score his first win?

I cant wait for the next round!

Rich, on Alex and Miki's opening, do you mean 9-13, 24-20, 10-14?

And very surprising to see Lubabalo off to such a bad start. I hope he can bounce back.

And do you mean Sergio Scarpetta vs. Lubabalo Kondlo 10-14 22-18 7-10? (The question mark is for a question, not an indication of a bad move, as all 156 openings in three-move balloting are sound!)

The games of the Sportaccord World Mind Games 2014 in Checkers, first three rounds:

http://www.federdama.it/cms/images/Pech ... no2014.htm

So far GM Sergio Scarpetta, the World Champion in GAYP from Italy leads with 8/12, ahead of World Champion GM Michhele Borghetti, Italy on 7 points and former World Champion Alex Moieyev (USA) on 6 points. Trailing after the first half is the winner of the last Qualifier and official challenger for the World Championship, GM Lubabalo Kondlo, South Africa, with 3 points.

This promises a sharp fight for the second half of the event. Today there is a rest day in Beijing.

Joe/George:

Yes, correct openings, as played in Rd. 3, were
9-13 24-20 10-14
10-14 22-18 7-10
Sorry -- must be getting sleepy from too many Chinese buffets here :)

Yesterday was a tour day for checkers group + 1 guest (minus Lubabalo who wanted to go to Pearl Market) where we went to Great Wall (Moiseyev and Charles Walker played a quick checker game on the Great Wall), Ming Tombs, lunch at local eatery, and a few "sales-pitch" stops at jade & silk factories and tea house, where several got some shopping done. Everyone seemed to have an enjoyable day. We start rapid games (15 min + 5 sec) portion in a few hours. So, pairings are same as Rd 1 with Alex-Lubabalo & Miki-Sergio.

Today was a repeat of results from Day 1 -- but with "rapid" time control (15-minute games)

Alex Moiseyev (USA) vs. Lubabalo Kondlo (RSA) 10-14 22-17 9-13 2 draws
Sergio Scarpetta (ITA) vs. Michele Borghetti (ITA) 9-13 24-19 5-9 2 draws

1. Sergio Scarpetta (Italy) 10
2. Michele Borghetti (Italy) 9
3. Alexander Moiseyev (USA) 8
4. Lubabalo Kondlo (South Africa) 5

Alex Moiseyev continues to be a "draw machine" in sportaccord with a career record here of 1-0 with 19 draws (including 2012 play)
Lubabalo Kondlo continues to be a "Black Hole" machine, as he has now drawn this opening 3 times in sportaccord (including 2012 play)

Sergio caught Alex with a GAYP opening line. That is what I call style for the GAYP World Champion :-)

Last round:

Looks like a tie for the Gold. Do they play it off?
