For those wondering what happened in the final round and the final outcome. I believe, to the be best of my knowledge, it ended as follows:

I was under the impression, as were many others, that the event would be held over five days and that 20 games would be played.

I was also (like many) under the impression that Mr. Lindus Edwards would represent Wales, but that was simply a wrong impression

I can not as yet confirm the results of the last round, especially the Price-Boyle encounter. This result however would not change that the winner was Michele Borghetti (italy), but it may change the order on the next places.

Wewill have to wait until the full final result has been reported to the WCDF by the referees for an official crosstable with an official result.

As of now I can only confirm that Michele Borghetti won the QT and the right to challenge Sergio Scarpetta and that Amangul Berdiyeva (Turkmenistan) won the Women's World Championships (GAYP).

It is like an election night: the spectators and reporters see the results and know who wins long in advance, but the official result can only be given after all votes have been counted and all reports are finally in.

We also can not give informations on the GA of the WCDF as yet, as the minutes of the GA have
not been reported yet.

Hi Ingo,

Many thanks for that information and indeed for previous posts which, I am sure, we all appreciate. Unfortunately, as mentioned in this chain some weeks ago, I did not feel I was a good enough player to represent Wales.

I am pleased to hear that games will be shown as I cannot wait to see them. I always learn so much by going over such great games.

The results from Knighton have all been posted on the Scottish Draughts website by Graham Young.

The Friday was reserved for playoffs. But no playoffs were needed.

Well, I accessed both cross tables. They both indicated the top 6 players each had 19 tournament points. Presumably the 6-way tie was broken by honor points, but the honor points were not given in either table.

Will somebody provide the honor points and explain why they alone are justification for shortening a tournament by a full day?

Why weren't some of those ties broken by playing real games on the day scheduled for that purpose?

Are "go-as-you-please" games between master players so uncompetitive that tie matches are the unavoidable norm? (That's what players concluded more than 100 years ago.)

Should master players be banned from "go-as-you-please-play", including the upcoming all Italy match? I am all in favor of a Borghetti-Scarpetta match, but not at "go-as-you-please".

These are just innocent questions from a layman seeking answers on a grass roots level.

Bill, the tie breaker rules are in WCDF Statutes are shown below. The tournament was not suddenly shortened a day, because Sonneborn-Berger first breaks the tie, so playoffs were not used. The women also had a similar tie for first (but among 2-players, who played a round-robin.). BTW, I mailed games to Jim Loy to process. While there were some repeat "GAYP" draws (I had a standard Dyke line several times throughout the week), there were also plenty of unique, competitive games as well.

In the case of a qualification tournament all ties must be broken by procedures detailed in Appendix 3, namely:

i. The result between the individual players – mini league if appropriate,
ii. Sonneborn-Berger,
iii. Playoff at rapid play rates.

Appendix 3. – General Tournament Regulations

3.1 Tie breaks available for tournaments are,
3.1.1 Mini League. This is a comparison between players on the same points. The results against each of the other tied players form a mini league the players being ordered accordingly. Should a mini league not be possible due to one or more players having not played or if ties are still apparent then ties are broken as below,
3.1.2 Sonneborn-Berger. This is the sum of each opponent’s score multiplied by the points scored against that opponent. The resulting total is ordered highest through lowest to determine ranking, otherwise if ties remain then proceed below,
3.1.3 Playoff. A playoff should be arranged by the referee under the remit of the event. If the playoff is to determine a result at the event then a succession of sets of games played at a faster rate as determined by the referee applies.
