Hi, Bill !

I remember one year in Alabama State 3-moves tournament I played 14 games, won 3, drew 11 and this was enough for "clear 1st place" without any tie! Dr. J. Webster was 2nd with 3 wins and 1 loss. So - it's not a style fault

I don't like to play GAYP and mainly in the past several years I prefer to stay away of these events, but why we should stop and prohibit others doing this and playing favor style ??

3-moves World title match was already played this year and next one will be in 2017. Sergio and other contenders will have a chance to do it again.

The 3 move and GAYP styles both have their afficiandos.
I think they can live side by side, (like Rugby Union and Rugby League)
with the present alternate sequence format for holding the World Championship matches.

However, it may be that the QT format could do with a bit of “beefing up” !
Thinking over the current QT I concluded that:
1. Limiting the number of rounds to 8, whereas utilising the extra day available would have
allowed 10 rounds, appears to have been a retrograde step.
2. In GAYP tournaments, two game rounds are neither necessary nor desirable.

would have been eminently preferable, and allowed anywhere from 12 to 16 rounds of play.

This format was successfully used for th British Irish Freestyle in Kildare a few years ago.

With playing 16 games (4 days) or 20 games (5 days), makes perfect sense to do Swiss (semifinals) + Round Robin Finals.

Lets say we have 20 players ...

Semifinal: Swiss system where players have 8 single game rounds and at the end are splitted into 2 final groups by 10 players: "A" (1-10 places), "B" (11-20),

Finals: each group play Round Robin totaling 9 single game rounds. Total number of event games in semifinals and finals - 17.

Winner of final group "A" will be declared as winner of event.

... Or something like this.

Matteo Bernini took second place by an edge, not Ron King as reported.

The winner however, was Michele Borghetti, no doubt.

May I refresh your memory for all GAYP Qualifiers so far? :

Prague 2005 (9 rounds): Jim Morrison won with 26/36= 72,2 % , two full points ahead of Baghtiyar and Mustafa Durdyev
Las Vegas 2007 (8 rounds, repairing): Luabalo Kondo won with 20/32 = 62,5 %, one point ahead of Beckwith.
Isle of Whight 2009 (8 rounds): Richard Beckwith won with 21/32 = 65,6 %, one point ahead of Freeman, McCosker and Morrison
San Remo 2011 (8 rounds): Sergio Scarpetta with 21/32= 65,6 %, one point ahead of Kondlo, Francis
Barbados 2013 (8 rounds): Sergio Scarpetta with 27/32= 84,4 % (!), six (!) points ahead of Morrison, Francis
Knoghton 2015 (8 rounds): Michele Borghetti on 19/32= 59,4 %, tied with Bernini, King, Beckwith, Martynov and Kondlo

We conclude: only one time a tiebreaker was needed to determine the winner.

Now we take a look at the 3-move Qualifiers, just to compare:

Barbados 2004 (8 rounds, repairing): Ron King with 25/32 = 78,1 %, 5 points ahead of Allicock and Devlin
Stonehaven 2006 (8 rounds): Ron King with 23/32 = 71,9 %, 4 points ahead of Baghtiyar Durdyev and Docherty
WMSG Beijng 2008 (9 rounds): Alex Moiseyev with 27/36 = 75,0 %, 4 points ahead of King and Paegle -> challenger race decided by tiebreaker
Dublin 2010 (8 rounds): Michele Borghetti with 23/32 = 71,9 % , won on tiebreaker ahead of King.
WMSG Lille 2012 (9 rounds): Michele Borghetti with 26/36 = 72,2 %, 2 points ahead of Scarpetta
Louisville 2014 ( 8 rounds): Lubabalo kondlo with 22/32 = 68,8 %, won by direct comparison (3-1) over Scarpetta.

record score: Ron King 78,1 %

Conclusions:
1. more often a 3-move QT was decided on tiebreaker (3 times) then a GAYT QT (one time)
2. the absolute record margin and record score is held by GAYP, while it also holds the record score for lowest percentage of the winner.
3. In average however, the 3-move winners scored constantly (with one exception), over 70 percent, while in GAYP the winning score was sometimes below 70 percent, and it had the only winner that scored less then 60 percent.

This indicates, that not the style and the system was the reason for the close race, but probaly the high level of the top players.
We had 8 grandmasters (a record), a current World Champion (Borghetti), a former World Champion (King), 4 players that have already played a GAYP WC match as challengers (Beckwith, Kondlo, Francis, Morrison) and three future World Champion candidates (Bernini, McCosker, Bashim Durdyev). Players that finished in the last five (Boyle, Morgan) did already won the prestigous Welsh Open in GAYP in previous years!

However, I like the idea of a different format for GAYP as proposed by Alex.

Thanks ! There is only one small problem

With 20 players in field they tied for 1-6 places. What happened if we remove rest (11-20) and leave only top 10 players which includes all 8 GM's, IM I. Martinov + Colin Price - both are good enough to drew any single GAYP game.

Then more likely we should have 90%-95% draws.

Just humoristic and curious thoughts.

Having all strong players only knockout system may help ... or maybe we shouldn't change anything and keep existing system which mix strong and average players.

Hi Ingo,

Just to correct you. John Morgan has never won the Welsh Open. That is not to say he will not, for if a player of my low playing standard can win it, albeit by sheer luck, I am sure John can as he is a far stronger player than I ever will be. Even though my health is in a serious condition and getting worse I try to attend as many tournaments as I can. Hopefully, next year, I will attend the British Open as a spectator and watch players such as Shane and William. I look forward to that very much.

On a different matter I made it clear some time ago that I did not feel I was good enough to play in the qualifiers as I felt there were a number of Welsh players who were more worthy. Unfortunately, for reasons I am unaware of, they failed to turn up. I was indeed sorry to see this.

Alex’s system is not good, because the number of participants may be much more than 20 players.
Each federation affiliated to WCDF can choose two players.
Swiss system is the best because it always works.

My system has Swiss semifinals at the first step. So - number of participants is not a problem.

However I agree that there is no reason to change things which are not broken. The main goal of any event - proper ranking players. For QT main goal - find best challenger. I believe QT 2015 accomplished it's goal.

I would say i had a pretty good tournament wining over John Morgan 1=0 and Graham young . drew with Jim morrison was the highlight of my tournament . i lost to paul Bryan . Colin price 1-0 and BASHIM 2-0 was lost of concentration.drew with john Jolieff 0-0 who went on to beat bashim. and drew 0-0 with anthony rose. 14 points being beaten by 5 points by the winner not bad for me Kent Ace layne. 3 draws 3 lost and 2 wins

i am awaiting to see what my ratings will look like.

On the topic of the best method to run a tournament it depends, of course, on how many are entered and whether it is a freestyle or three-move event. In Welsh Open tournaments of one game per round (tossing a coin to determine colours) we have had as many as eighteen games played in two days! Recently this has been reduced to twelve games at, again, one game per round. Upsets, such as my winning the event by sheer luck, can occur with so few games.
Even in the Centenary English Open (three-move) in 1989 when twenty games were played we saw a huge surprise when a certain player was runner-up to Ron King who was in the most incredible form at the time. We saw a number of grandmasters in that event such as Richard Pask, who was placed third, Hugh Devlin, Bill Edwards (my father was seriously ill at that time and uncharacteristically came only 5th), Tom Watson, Jimmy Grant, Con McCarrick, Fred Buckby and a number of other great players. The shock runner-up prize went to a player who only entered to make up the numbers. That shock player was me! It only goes to prove that a complete ham can finish in a high, and indeed false, position in a tournament of many grandmasters. There is no perfect way of running a tournament but I think the best we can do over five days is use the Swiss System of twenty games in a three-move event. Just a couple of thoughts there...
