Congratulations to Igor for equalizing score! Is that a first Shane tournament lost in the past several years ?
Six years I think :).

It was not a peaceful match. We had no short quick games at all. Both sides led an exiting fight for the wins all time long. Next days I intend to write a detailed report about my trip to Ireland, to inform you about the highlights of our match and following Irish Open, to tell you about an amazing Inishowen Draughts Club as well as to show you my photos of the beautiful Ireland

One Euro match and the amazing Unishowen Draughts Club

There are not so many major Checkers events in Europe, therefore I was very glad when Shane McCosker accepted my challenge to play a friendly match. Currently, Shane is the strongest player in the UK and Ireland and it was extremely interesting to me to battle against him. Strangely enough, though we have participated in many competitions together, we have only played each other once and there we drew. We got a good opportunity now face to face to define who is stronger — German or Irish-British champion. The objective chances of winning the match were clearly not in my favour. Shane is twice as young: he is 29 years old, I am — 63 and at the same time he has twice more practice: he has played Checkers 16 years already, but I started only after the 1st World Mind Sports Games in Beijing in 2008, it means 8 years; Shane is the international Grandmaster and I am only intermaster. However, just that attracts me most of all, it is always interesting for me to play with a tough rival, as well as to get acquainted with new people and to study another country which I would never visit without Checkers and that is why I remain.

We agreed to hold our match just before the Irish Open in order to participate in that as well. This year the Irish players decided for the first time to organize their championship in a small resort, Ballylifin, located on a peninsula Inishowen in the north of the country close to the border of Northern Ireland, owned by the British. «Irish Draughts Federation» and the biggest draughts club of Ireland — «Inishowen Draughts Club» actively supported our idea of the match and the «Strand Hotel» (http://www.ballyliffinstrandhotel.com/) where the Irish Open was held became our official sponsor and overtook our costs for the hotel accomodation and gave us the special room for games. We decided to play a 3-move match of 20 games with the time control: the first half of the match with analog chess clock 1 hour for 30 moves and 30 minutes for each next 15 moves but the second part with digital clock and Fisher control — 45 minutes per game plus 25 seconds for each move just like at the last World Qualifier in Rome. It is curious that in the subsequent Irish Open the opponents were given 1,5 hour for two games and the time used as wished.

I am an experienced tourist and I know that if you prepare well in advance, then it is possible to travel quite inexpensively. With the help of the modern means of communication and Internet the search for cheap tickets turned into some kind of sports hunting. So tickets Dusseldorf — Dublin and return cost 96€, I also managed to find a direct bus from the airport to the destination Ballylifin for just 20€. It is interesting that to some players from England and Scotland the journey in price and time cost approximately the same as for me but from Germany.

Despite a lot of draws, our match happened to be very hard, equal and absolutely nonpeaceful. There were no quick and short draws at all. In all games there was an intense struggle till the last man. Just before our match we decided to play not for money or some benefit but for training and pleasure. The prize fund did not exist. We agreed: let's play for an „honourable 1€“ from our own pocket — 1 German Euro against the Irish. The match is a matter of honor!

Already in the second game Shane managed to confuse me and with a temporary sacrifice to achieve a nice win and to take the lead. However at the end of our match I could beat my opponent in a double-edged position and equalize the score. Shane is a very reliable player and loses extremely seldom. It was his first defeat in the last 6 years. Our match finished in a draw 10 : 10. So we remained with our own money, nobody managed to win the „honourable 1 Euro“. Of course, I was very pleased and proud of such a result. After all, the match is the most objective indicator of forces. „There's life in the old dog!“ Perhaps it is my best achievement in Checkers.

The match was covered in the local press and I saw some articles in the newspapers. It was also broadcast life on the Internet. For Shane the technical aspect of this issue didn’t represent any special complexity, he has a university education in the theory of computer games. Our match was actively visited by Checkers fans. They are very friendly, welcoming and hospitable. So one of them between rounds took us to the most northern point of Ireland, Cape Malin Head from where it’s „a stone’s throw“ to Canada overseas. Another fan suggested buying us a drink once and when we thanked him and refused as we just had a heavy breakfast, he left us 20€ to buy something for ourselves. My wife and I still got an invitation to have a holiday in Ireland in the next year. It was especially surprising to me since I have relatives in Dusseldorf whom I’d never visited yet.

One evening, we were brought to the Unishowen Draughts Club where the local fans of Checkers gather. By the way, in UK and Ireland the game is called Draunghts and the name Checkers came from America. There is no state support for Checkers in Ireland and the game is supported exclusively by the enthusiasm of Checkers lovers. There is no special building for the draughts club, it is the usual Irish Pub where every Tuesday thrill-seekers come from all over the peninsula Inishowen to play their favorite game of Checkers, to communicate and to drink beer. Despite the fierce fighting, the atmosphere in the hall is very relaxed and friendly. They play quickly enough and hazardously, there appears often the puzzling complication where the Russians would say that „it is impossible to understand anything without a half-liter of Wodka.“ They arrive by cars, trucks or buses, everyone has his own personal checkerboard where, under the board, is embedded a box with drawers for the pieces. It looks great fun and very cool. I really enjoyed watching their play and communicating with them. On the wall I found also a curious announcement written by hand of a tournament for beginners, where the entry fee goes to collect money to buy a cow for aid to Kenya. WAW!!!

The staff of the hotel was very pleasant. In the mornings when I ran for the morning gymnastics to the coast they always welcomed me, during the day they were interested in my progress and were always ready to help if there were any problems. One morning after my jogging they asked me:
- "How are you?"
- "I’m fine." I said. "I wanted to swim, but I could get in only to my knees and went back."
- "And why?"
- "The water was cold."
- "John!" she addressed to her colleague, "Somebody says that the water is cold here. Is it true?"
- "No, it‘s not cold at all." John answered and grinned. (It was the end of October.)
When once suddenly my glasses jumped out of my pocket and from the first attempt got precisely into a gap between the elevator and the floor (you will try many times and will never get it so accurately!), they promised me to call a special service and then to send the glasses by mail. I thanked them and refused – the glasses were not worth it. However I asked them to find them during the annual control and to keep them – it might be a good reason to come back here again! They offered me a choice of any glasses from a big collection previously forgotten by their customers once.

Right after our match there started the main Checkers event in Ireland — the Irish Open, which was also the final 8th stage of the European Cup 2016. The competition was held in 3 groups: masters, intermediate and seniors. In addition to their own Irish players the participants from neighboring England and Scotland arrived as well as me from Germany. Earlier in different years many famous people participated in the Irish Open: Alex Moiseyev from US, Ron King from Barbados, the Italian Sergio Scarpetta and the big family Durdyev from Turkmenistan.

In the first round of the masters tournament a lot joined us with Shane McCosker again and we continued our dispute. Our combat reached its culmination: «the blood spilled» again, unfortunately it was mine. In our first game in a complicated position Shane understood better than me and with a series of tactical threats moved it into the winning endgame which I didn't begin to play, to keep more time for the next game. And here the miracles have begun! In our second game we both made very strange blunders. Apparently to some extent fatigue and stress affected after our match. In the opening Shane sacrificed a man but his position had an adequate compensation. Then my rival chose a wrong plan but in the heat of battle both of us (!) did not notice that the second man was sacrificed as well. When a peace agreement followed, on my proposal :bounce: , we both (!) were confident that the game was equal. Only when the surprised spectators asked us (they knew how to count the number of pieces!), why it was a draw, Shane with surprise and I with horror found out that I had one extra man more and a technical win didn't represent any particular complexity. Such a tragicomic incident happened for the first time in my whole practice and at Shane's too. It was an amazing case of mutual blunders!
However, in nature everything is balanced — sometimes you lose and sometimes you win — and what I didn't get in the first round I found in the second against Paddy Doyle (and even more) where in the course of our play I could lose both games but at the end I received 3 points instead of 0. Further I lost also to the Irish player Nb 2 Myles Hannigan but won all other matches and as a result I finished in the honorable 3rd place. If I spent all my power in the match and in the tournament I was often mistaken, Shane was warmed up very well and he confidently won the Irish Open, beating all his rivals. At the same time he won the European Cup 2016 in the overall standings as well. Bravo!!! As befits his rank Myles Hannigan got the 2nd place. The only woman ex-World female champion Patricia Breen played pretty well in the masters tournament and took the respectable 9th place. By the way, all results and crosstables can be found on my sitehttp://home.arcor.de/checkers64/.

It is a surprising tradition in Ireland in their tournaments in the Swiss system to hold a so-called "re-pairing" in the last round, when the players are forcibly coupled regardless of whether they have already played each other or not - first with second, third with fourth etc. In my opinion, it is a decision, which may be correct only for the definition of the first and last places. For the other prize places it can have fatal consequences. For the Irish, the most important is – to establish the strongest. However, in this tournament the re-pairing had no effect on the distribution of the top 3 prizes and they remained in their places.

The president of the Irish Draughts Federation, Joe McGuire, told me about the history of Checkers in Ireland. The game was extremely widespread here since the early 18th century. It was played everywhere — on streets, in pubs, in theaters. The game acquired a special popularity at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to George Flaming — the owner of cinemas and theaters, the patron and great fan of Checkers. He did a lot for the development and promotion of this game. After the brutal suppression of the Irish revolt against England in 1916 there were many crises including, alas, in Checkers. The game endures its Renaissance since 1970 when in Dublin alone there were thousands of active players and competitions were held even in 4 leagues. Sadly, a steady decline in interest in the game can be seen from 1995 up to today. Unfortunately, the youth prefers hunting Pokemons to playing Checkers.

At the closing awarding ceremony I received two crystal cups for the match and for the 3rd place. They are the most beautiful in my collection of sports trophies I have ever had and they decorate my room now, pleasing the eyes and warming the soul. Bill Dobbins made donations to the participants of the match and, together with prize money for the Irish Open, I got back all my travel expenses. I also made a speech, thanked the hosts for the warm welcome, talked a little about Russian draughts, expressed a confidence that in a couple of years Shane will still play the match for the World title and our match was helpful for him. In my opinion, Shane is the only player in Europe who can really resist the domination of Italians in English-American Checkers.

My return flight Dusseldorf — Dublin was next day in the morning. In the evening, I was driven up to the nearby city of Derry lying in another country — the UK, where casually dressed and decorated young people loudly and cheerfully celebrated Halloween. From there I took the night bus to the airport. Tired but satisfied I came back home but after a few days I had already the next trip. Together with my wife we visited our old friend Michel in Paris. A Russian proverb says: «Have not 100 rubles — have 100 friends!». However, that is already quite another story.

A) it looks to be a problemmaker, better: 27-24 – etc.

B) after a shot Red will get a bad ending: 21-17 x 30-25 x 16-12 xx 8-11 xx 13-9 10-15 32-27 19-23 xx 22-17 11-16 – etc.

C) no relief after: 32-28 8-11 xx 22-17 (if 22-18 5-9 31-27 4-8 26-22 8-12 22-17 7-11 30-25 12-16 x 11-16 – RW) 4-8 19-16 8-11 31-27 5-9 29-25 11-15 26-22 1-5 30-26 15-19 16-12 19-24 23-19 x 19-15 xx 9-14 - RW

The game is equal now.

E) nice but wrong, correct: 19-15 11-16 xx 15-11 17-22 30-25 6-10 11-7 23-27 x 10-14 - draw

F) inaccuracy, correct: 11-16 25-21 x 21x14 24-27 x 23-27 24-20 27-31 28-24 31-27 30-25 6-9 – etc. Red has good chances to win

G) White continue their wrong plan, correct defense is: 19-15 – etc.

H) mistake, it is not late to play again: 11-16 21-17 xx 3-7 18-14 6-10 - RW

I) now it is too late and even loses. Escape was possible after: 25-29 x 29-25 xx 19-15 11-16 15-11 25-22 18-14 22-18 - draw

A) Strange enough but it is a losing move, correct defence: 2-7 with following 6-10 - etc.

B) White resigned because of the joyless ending after: 1-6 23-19 6-10 22-17 x 19-16 x 27-23 – etc.

A) loses, of course Red needs to go: 23-27 - etc.

B) misses a win, correct to go without exchange: 22-18 - etc.

C) Red misses an escape, after: 2-6 – etc. White cannot win. The tragicomedy is that we both(!) did not see that Red sacrifíces the second man!

D) Peaceful agreement although White has an easy win here
