WCDF QT & World Championships 2017

Going into the final day, the thee South African Musketeers GM Lubabalo Kondlo, Melika Nonyukela - both on 16 points - and Maxwell Luntonti fight with the old legend Ronal "Suki" King (Barbados) - both on 15 points- for the right to challenge World Champion Michele Borghetti (Italy), with young gun GM Matteo Bernini (Italy) on 14 points still in striking distance.

The World Championship for Women is as close as can be as well.

This time it will be another victory for the famous ukrainian women draughts school that has already secured many World Championships, Gold Medals and titles in all kinds of draughts. The question is: who will carry the laurel of fame back home ?

Tanya Zaitseva (Kiew) in her very first Checkers tourament abroad is ahead by one point of former World Champion Nadiya Chyzhevska (now Kiev, former Donetsk).

Every mistake, every miscalculation can now be very costly with only one round to go!

Lapin, Vadim (Ukraine) - IM Webster, John (USA)
Cantatore, Elia (Italy) - GM Scarpetta, Sergio (Italy)
IM Sokolovsky, Mark (USA) - Katamba, Nicholas (Uganda)

14. Katamba, Nicholas (Uganda) 1 pt., 16 S/B

Congratulations to GM Lubabalo Kondlo (South Africa), who first won the US Nationals 2017 and then also the WCDF Qualifier 2017.
With this fine victory he won the right to challenge World Champion Michele Borghetti (ITA) in 2018. Overall he showed the most consistent performance with the highest tiebreaker and no ups and downs and surely deserved his triumph.

Maybe his lifelong dream of becoming World Champion could come true and a new final chapter to "King Me" should be filmed...?

Congratulations to Alex Moiseyev (USA), who at last miraculously managed to tie for 1st place, but
his tournament was a story of ups and downs, not quite consistent enough to prevail.

Congratulations to Melikaya Nonyukela (South Africa) who also tied for 1st place, but lost to Lubablo in Round one. One bad move may have made the difference, but maybe not next time!

Very strong performances were also made by Ron King (Barbados), Maxwell Luntonti (South Africa) and Matteo Bernini (Italy), who managed to stay undefeated, but were a bit unlucky with the pairings and surely should have made higher places.

Please check the points totals for Lapin and Cantatore. I have Lapin on 10 points not 14 and I have Cantatore on 11 and not 7

the points totals shown for lapin and Cantatore after 5 5 seem to be incorrect . After r4 Lapin was on 7 points and Cantatore was on 5 points. They met on r 5 and according to the results shown Lapin lost twice to Cantatore . This would put Lapin on 7 points and Cantatore on 9 points but the standings after round 5 shows Lapin on 11 points and Cantatore on 5

Thanks for pointing that out, but the mistake was just the other way round. The result of the encounter Lapin - Cantatore was not 0-4 but 4-0 in favor of Lapin. So the final standings are correct, but I made a mistake in reporting the results of round five.
