Summer Tournaments

Post by JR Smith »

I got this email from Joe McDaniel...

Hey J. R. Just a couple of updates. The GAYP, 24-game match between Matteo Bernini and Lubabalo Kondlo is scheduled here in Tulsa right after the National 3-move tourney. They will both play in the tourney and then have one day of rest on September 4. Play will start on September 5 and continue thru September 10 in the same hotel. They will play 4 games per day. You should add this to your calendar.

As it looks right now I seriously doubt that any of the tourneys or the matches this summer will happen because of the virus. The Sergio/Alex 3-move match in early June will probably not happen. The Qualifier in Vidor scheduled for July 13-16 is in serious trouble. I don’t believe the tourneys or matches will be cancelled but postponed indefinitely. Probably sometime in 2021. I can’t see a solution to the virus problem any time soon. But we will see. It’s really a sad situation.

Hope you are doing well.

Joe

JR and Joe - nothing definitely changed yet with my and Sergio match in the beginning of June in ICHF.

If American Airline will be functioning at this time (June 6), I don't see any reason why we can't play. All states in United States, especially southern states, are planning to start opening and functioning in May.

I am cautious optimist regarding fate of match and score outcome in this match. For the time now the only potential impact I see - me and Sergio can avoid shaking hands before and after the game :)

Cross fingers!

I think one difference here is that the Moiseyev-Scarpetta match could proceed with as few as 3-4 people in the room. Contrast that to a US National or a World Qualifier (with many more international travelers) that would exceed some guidelines about limiting gatherings of 10 or more people. Even as the US economy slowly opens in low-infected areas, "social distance" measures (such as keep six feet apart, wear masks, plexiglass between customer and cashiers) will likely remain for a time. I wonder if anyone knows how other games (10x10/64-draughts, chess, etc.) in both USA and Europe plan to address this? They may be struggling with the same dilemma -- it's hard to forecast months ahead when things change weekly.

Has President Trump lifted the travel ban from Europe? If not don't see how Moiseyev vs Scarpetta
could take place. I may have missed him lifting the travel ban. Hope match plays as would be a
competitive match.

Travel ban not lifted yet by D. Trump. However from all development, rumors and speculations it seems very realistic to me that things can be improved in the next few weeks. My own State Ohio started slow re-opened beginning May 1 and some other states are on the way. I am a big lover of numbers -=> all statistics and graphs show that we (USA) are close to flatten phase of pandemic.

If D. Trump wants to jump-start economy (and he does!), flights and travel across the globe are important components of growth and stability.

Stay positive !

Alex, I hope you are right but I heard that it will be 2021 before International flights start back. President Trump wants to get flights going as you say as the Airline industry is hurting. Only about 5% flying now in U. S.. Anyway, lets get this virus over and get back to normal. I am 81 years old and this is the
worst crisis in my lifetime. We need vaccine soon so everything can get back to Normal.
