Re: 2023 German Open - July 8 & 9 - Korbach
At the start of the tournament there were 10 players from Korbach, Heidelberg, Berlin, Dortmund, Cologne and Düsseldorf, and we received one foreigner from the Czech Republic, Filip Kareta. Unfortunately, the women's world champion Nadiya Chyzhevska from Magdeburg did not come. And also a very strong player from Kenya, Odawo Benard, who is currently studying at Edeka in Germany.
We decided to play round-robin, where everyone plays with everyone - the most objective system of tournaments. After the first day, one participant fell ill and we had to cancel all his results, as he played less than half of the tournament. I started with 15 wins in a row, but continued my old bad tradition of losing in the last round. However, fortunately, this did not affect the overall result, since at that moment I already had a lead of 5 points from the nearest pursuer.
The weather was very warm and pleasant. Despite the heated battles, there was a very friendly atmosphere at the tournament and, having finished all the games of the first day, we all spent the whole evening, talking, sitting at the common table in the cafeteria outside.
The result of the current German Open did not come as a surprise to me. The novelty was that I acted as a playing referee. It was my first experience as a judge. I have used DraughtsArbiter for draw and crosstab. The crosstab was saved on the official FMJD website and viewers could see it all the time. Results could be updated after each round. Of course, I was helped by our German Draughts and Checkers presidents Jan Zioltkowski and Ingo Zachos, who controlled my actions.

Igor, congratulations on first place in the German Open 2023 with 32 points, even with multi-tasking as referee! You certainly had strong competition with Filip Kareta in second place with 29 points, and Jan Zioltkowski in third place with 26 points!
