Is the match between King and Morrison only 20 games? I thought that world championship matches were always 40 games.

Hello JDC:

The match between Ron 'Suki' King and James Morrison calls for 24 games with 4 games to be played each day and 24 moves per hour. Games will be property of WCDF. Match fund will be a 60/40 split. Match fund currently is $3,500.00. I received a check from one of our very few top supporters, Mr. Victor Niederhoffer for $1,000.00 that is now part of the $3,500.00............................

Jon, GAYP matches traditionally ALWAYS have 24 games, and 3-moves matches traditionally ALWAYS have 40 games. The only exception I am aware - last GAYP match Francis vs King (2006) was 30 games.

What is not traditionally in this match, Morrison vs King - low price fund .

Hello Mr. Alex:

Until a few weeks ago there was not any prize fund !! The WCDF had no bids to host the match and the ICHF stepped forward to provide a playing area, rooms and meals for the players and officials. To date I have not received any individual donations from anyone on Earth, except Mr. Victor Niederhoffer. I leave for Petal,Ms. a week from today. Donations for the match can be sent to me at Post Office Box # 1, Belpre,Ohio 45714-0001.

Hello, Mr. Millhone !

I am sure it will be a great match, and I wish you as Match Referee "an easy life" I hope match games will be delivered to fraternity (free or not free) without much delay.

Jim told me that this time he is much better prepared for his match than in 1986 and wants to give Suki a shot. I don't want to make any predictions, but I hope life coverage of match progress will be done in this forum.

Can you take care of this part and make a short postings here every day, like I did in Anderson ?

I have no idea on how the WCDF will handle the match games ?

It is still not too late to make that match donation as I will not leave for Petal till next Sunday morning.

Traditionally the very worst times to ask people for money are right before the Christmas holiday (although a lot of needy charities raise considerable amounts of money at this time) and right before ones taxes are due--on April 15th. This may very well account for the low prize fund for this pre-holiday November match.

Of course it is not the money that matters.
Does anybody know how much money Anderson won against Wylie (Good question for Checker Trivia btw). Or Yates against Wylie ? Or Richard Jordan against Steward ?
I would even claim that Alex will and wants to be remembered as the player winning the world title from Ron King, not as the man that won XX,XXX Dollars.

It is the first time the World Championship title in the original style of the game is defended (or lost) against a qualified Challenger.

No money needed to emphasize the importance of this match.
I could never understand why the purse should matter at all.
To determine the best player on earth, the World Champion, is the purpose of this match, not to determine the richest player or to play for the highest stake.
I was told that for a long time a very famous Golf tournament was played for the price of 1 Pound for the winner, and it was always the same Pound note, which each winner had the right to sign and then to buy the first drink at the closing ceremony.

As I recall Marion attended a match and they did not have the promised prize funds, so he refused to play. Another well known checker contributor came to the rescue with more $$$$$$ and the match was played. And I don't ever recall Marion playing for just the recognition that came in knowing that he won a match.

Once Marion Tinsley was scheduled to play in a championship match and the purse was just $100 below what he thought he should get and Marion said he wouldn't play unless the $10,000 purse was guaranteed. I donated the last $100 so match could be played. I asked Marion about this later as $100 didn't seem like much money to me but he said he was emabarrassed about how much the World Checker Champion would get in a World Championship match when questioned by the media. Of course the World Chess championship has millions in their prize fund and he had a lot of pride and couldn't tell the world that he was just playing for peanuts. What Marion failed to realize is that the same game of chess is played world wide where there are numerous versions of checkers played around the world. If there was only one version of checkers played around the world then I believe checkers could demand the high dollars for their championship tourney. Personally, I think it is a honor to play for the world championship and I think the two players participating should be donating to the checker federations to make checkers better for all. I do think their expenses should be paid , however. The winning of the title should be enough as winning a world championship is hard to do even in horse shoes. I know my opinion won't be shared by many but I have been playing checkers for over 50 years and I play for the love of the game and not to make a living out of my hobbie.

Why not ? Aren't checkers good enough ?

Do you like your job ? If yes - why you need to be paid for, do it as hobbie, for free.

The Russian proverb says: "If you are so smart, why you are so poor ?"

Checkers is not a fun game or kids brain game. This is serious business, requires years of study and experience ... as any other job. You can't master the game without spending your time.

Marion Tinsley tried to raise, or at least keep respect to the title at the level where it suppose to be. Million people have checkers board and pieces at home and are familiar with rules. If game is not promoted well - it's not a game fault, but only people.
