I take it that this is Ron as there was no "King" listed on the results of the 1st day's play. A late arrival? Can someone clarify this? Go on Shane .....

Hmmm ... you might be right. Maybe Shane / Alan / Kim clarify this for us, and if it is R. King from Barbados - how they want to handle this: late makeup or something else ?

Hello Alex,

Ron King missed the first 4 rounds as he arrived late missing two different flights. After 8 rounds Ron King has 14 points but still trail the leader , John Webster who has 21 points. There are 5 rounds left but Ron told me he still thinks he will win this tourney!! By the way, Shane M. from Ireland is second with 20 points and is playing great. Shane is only 20 years old but I think the future is bright for him.

All the best,
Mac

Thanks, Mac ! Ron likes challenge

I am glad to see Dr. Webster is doing well. But more than that I am very glad to see young Shane performance here. Very, very good. Draughts fraternity is eager to see a new generation come to arena, which keeps our game alive !

Hmm ... if Shane wins the tournament, he might be the only 2nd player after Asa Long, who won USA National on first occasion (debutant). Although Asa was 18 years old, which is hard to beat !

Man from South Africa

Post by Alan Millhone »

Hello Mr. Alex:

Lubabalo Kondlo has not lost a game yet and took a game from Joe Schwartz last night with white side of Montrose Cross, must have read SIXTH carefully :-) Kim Willis got a bye round and went to bed. More updated results later today from her. Jim Loy new book selling well. Dr. Beckwith has copies on sale here. Yes, Shane doing exceptionally well.

I lost a game and had a draw vs. Jack Francis and Michael Homes yesterday and played Joe Schwartz to two draws (3 hours) . We need many more youth in the ACF and Checkers.

Dr. Webster still leading, he is very solid GAYP player. 100 degrees here in Vegas each day. Playing room is huge as it is the hotels show room for performances.

Asa Long did not win as he first enterd a US ty.
In fact, he played in the 1920 Nationals and qualified, after the preliminary rounds, for the minors, where he did not too well.
But he was appointed offical mascott of the ACA on that occasion.
He won his second US Nationals in1922.
But Gonotsky was winning it at the first attempt in 1924, when 20years of age.

I don't know if there where others winning it on the first attempt.
Maybe Charles Barker and Hugh Henderson did, but these were the first two US Nationals, so you can't really call them debutant.
Shane also played World Qualifiers and Irish Open before, so he is not a debutant anymore.
Note that Shane only finished third at the Youth World Championships in Prague 2005, so you see that there are indeed great talents outside the USA, and I believe that they would play well at the US nationals, too, if they had a chance.

Ingo, shame on me - not a good historian  You probably right - we shouldn't go so far back. Perhaps it will be better to say, that noone won US National GAYP tournament on first attempt in modern years.

I didn't mention that Shane is debutant to game, I mentioned that he is a debutant to US National tournaments and I am very well aware of his performance and progress.

If Shane and Irish organisers agree - I would be glad and happy to add few games with him on my "exhibition activities list" in Ireland this fall.

Hello Alex,

It is true that Lubablo Kondlo has not lost a game but Ron King showed Shane where he missed a win in a 5 x 5 ending. If Shane had won this ending he would have been tied for lead. Jim Loy has done a great job of putting Elbert Lowders games in a book with annotations. I bought 3 of these books and gave a copy to Ron King and also one to Shane. I am leaving today for San Diego, Calif. so I will miss the rest of the tourney. By the way, the Plaza playing room is very nice and the hotel has good access to Fremont street .

All the best,
Mac Banks
