Too late ! He should do this degree 10-15 years ago when it was a boom in computer science.

I don't know how things are in Ireland, but in USA in the past several years most IT jobs were outsourced, mostly to India. I am talking about millions jobs which will never come back to USA

I can confirm this as computer programmer with 19 years exeperienece in USA. I am 51 now and I am very sceptical and don't think I'll be abe to survive until retirement age.

America obviously needs some sort of "isolate politic" and all this Global Trading endency is killing economy and American middle class.

I wish Shane good luck with his degree and more important - after finishing school, find a job which is matching his skills.

I dont think the allow 7yr old bhoys to do degrees as Shane woulda been been 15yrs ago, obviously you misunderstood me Alex or your just a bad listener(Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving.) LOL.Anyway Shane has his degree finished and in the bag so all he needs now is a job.And dont worry abt lil things like being "sceptical" of reaching retirement age thats just a mind set and besides we could be dead tomorrow ,you see theres more important things in life ,home family ,health,checkers?/heheh... now they are things you should worry abt ,not if your gonna be in a job till yur 70? .Life is for living and yu only get the one go at it .........rethink yur strategy for life and while employment is important its not top of the heap.Open your mind and be happy.

Yes !!

Shane has only dropped 3 points out of possible 24 !! Fantastic...

My question is will he beat the score which i attained in last years scottish , 32 out of possible 40 ? As here there

is no repairing and the opponents are getting even easier every day I guess he will .

I had Tommy watson on the phone and he told me he had 13 points from possible 24... He seems

pretty down , but there is no erasing this great champions accomplishments

Tommy, you probably didn't undertstand my message. First of all - nothing can bring Russians down  , because they have a good experience living on the miserable level.

But ...

I am an old sceptic and pessimist and beleive that maximum worse is only coming. But I am also fatalist and beleive that everything happened - out of our control, so - nothing to be worry about !

But I am an old man. It is really hard to explain this to youngers like Shane who can't find a job matching his skills and degree for about a year.

I actually only had 31 ( instead of 32 as noted in last post) from 40 in last years scottish.

Shane theoretically could hit 8 on top of his 27 , which would probably be the highest points ever

scored in a British ty. 35 from 40 would be an incredible achievement , however despite Shane's

talent and merit , one is inclined to ask the following question . What do these high scores (

31/40 for me and , for talking sake let's say 33/40 for Shane ) really indicate ?

Is the level in checkers reflecting the actual state of the nation ... ie. Extremely rich and

extremely poor with no in between ?

Anyway I congratulate Shane on an unprecidented victory , and wish him all the best for the future

Its hard to say Billy what these scores suggest,my take on it would be we may be a new era perhaps a new dawn with the previous strong players now coming back to the field and leveling out somewhat overall. What will be interesting tho i how the finishing scores of from 2nd to last equate, esp in the middle range id expect them to be quite close together, say from 2nd to 8th ,in my opinion take honor pts to place them. Then there is the psycological overtures to players on the up, meeting those on the down, and thinking these guys are not unbeatable as we once thought, compare that to the thinking of the formally strong players now not as sure footed as they were and confidence has done a complete turn-around.I n election predictions i think they call it a certain percentage swing>!!

On the otherhand down thru the years there has always been the exceptional players who have constantly been ahead of the field, this still holds true today but overall i think there has been a generational shift thats what i (if i was a betting man) put it down to the most likely cause.I can see this continue over the next 7/8 yrs as the two sides begin to meet and clog the middle ground,it will be interesting to see who comes out of the pack to make the running and step up to the mark, over the next 10 yrs or so.!!

Very, very impressive ! Hot congratulations to Shane McCosker and his coach Tommy Canning for oustanding play !

======================================================================

Tommy, in your message you are saying "generation" but I don't see any evidents of new generation at all. There are just 1-2 players who became to arena, another 1-2 improved. Thats not a generation or any kind of big movement.

In United States I would mention Richard Beckwith and Michael Holmes, who continue to work on checkers and constatntly improve but each of them is close to 40 and we can't call them young or new (both play checkers more than 15 years)

This is still doesn't create much pessure on the "roof" and level of competition is extremely low.

If we just look at other form of checkers, 10x10, we can see that one inch below world champion there are 6-8 oustatnding players, one more inch below - another 15-20 players. . In chess these numbers are hundreds.

We don't have such compress picture in English Draughts ... unfortunately

In 10x10 in my earlier 50's I would be retired, now in English Draughts - I am the youngest (ha-ha) player in half of events where I participate !

I don't see much hopes and this doesn't make me very optimistic.

Changing the hands for the world champion title (some day this shall happen indeed) will not change the tendency of dropping field, losing players and weakening ground.

In reply to Alex id agree with most of wat he said and Shane has many coaches ........i think there is a new generation of players online who as ive said b4 need to be harnessed and nurtured, the time line is not infinite. These guys wont be there in 2-3 yrs they will have moved b4 the seeds have been sown.Im not sure if anyone has the will power to do this and the "dream young" theme will soon lose its flavor if nothing is done.To my mind its a endemic lack of structure in checkers and checker federations. My 7yr old twin grand-daughters football team even have a coach ,so checkers way far behind in even the basic structures and its not just now sure its always been that way.Its a fundamental crack in the foundation so sooner or later it will crash unfortunately.
