The History of the Canadian Match Championship

On pages 3 and 4 of the December 2003 ACF Bulletin, there was information about the 2003 Canadian Match Championship, and then a brief write up, “Remarks on Prior Matches,” with a list of some of the matches, their dates, locations, and results. The Editor’s note indicated other matches were played and “perhaps an interested and informed reader could help fill in the details.” I have received the following information from Bruce Morrison of Longueuil, Quebec, Canada (brother of Earl, our current Match Champion) which he requested I submit to the ACF Bulletin:

Professor W. R. Fraser held the title until his death in 1971. A new Canadian Match Champion was now required. The Ontario Checker Association, the Hamilton Checker Club, and the Montreal Checker Club decided that a special closed tournament for the top six Masters be held in Toronto. It was supervised by A. S. Wheeler. The winner of this closed tournament was Jimmy Thompson, a young man in his twenties, son of Ed Thompson, well known Canadian Master. Jimmy was declared the Canadian Match Champion in 1972. He held the title until 1975, when he quit playing checkers. In 1974, Bruce Morrison challenged Jim Thompson to a 20 game match which was held in Toronto. The referee and host was A. S. Wheeler. The final score was 3 wins each, and 14 draws, so Jim retained the title. When Jim quit checkers, Bruce Morrison was declared the Canadian Match Champion, because of his match record and high tournament scores. On the Canadian Match Cup (which Leroy Adams refurbished prior to his 2003 match with Earl Morrison), and which is now held by Earl in Montreal, is recorded the following:

Some questions:
- Does anyone know how Earl Morrison got the title from his brother Bruce? Was there a match and if so does anyone have a record of it?
- The 1996 match between Earl and Leroy - can someone confirm that the final score of this match was 7-5 for Leroy with 18 draws? There was a question about one of the wins in the games Jim posted so it was either 6-5 with 19 draws or 7-5 with 18 draws.
- The 2003 match between Earl and Leroy - can someone confirm that the final score of this match was 8-5 for Earl with 15 draws?

While I did not find anything Canadian on the OMOCH Timeline for 1996, I did find the Chinook website news page had this entry:

November 28, 1996: Leroy Adams from Winnipeg is the new Canadian Champion after defeating the defending champion from Montreal Earl Morrison 6-5 with 19 draws.

The OMOCH Timeline has this entry in black for 2003:

10/22-26 CANADIAN MATCH CHAMPIONSHIP.
EARL MORRISON VS. L. ADAMS 8-4-15 DRAWS at ANCASTER, ONTARIO.
MORRISON WINS TITLE.

In the revised edition of One Jump Ahead by Jonathan Schaeffer, on page 141 he writes that "Canadian master Earl Morrison" played Chinook to a pair of draws in the last round of the Mississippi State Open won by Chinook in 1990. Chinook by then was very strong as immediately followed in Mississippi was the U. S. National Tournament where Chinook played Marion Tinsley in four drawn games. "We did it!!!" (page 162)

It was Ron King who won the Canadian Open in 2004, and Alex Moiseyev who won the Canadian Open in 2006. Both Tournaments were held in Hamilton, Ontario.

I am looking forward to a Canadian Match entry in the OMOCH Timeline for 2017.
