I sent the following in an email to Dr John Reade today:


Hi John,

This is my official withdrawal from the 2015 world championship qualifiers tournament at Knighton.

My reasons for this are as follows:

Firstly, I will not play in an event which presents such an illustrious list of names, for to do so would lower the tone of the event. A player of my level has no place in such a tournament.


Secondly, I note that the WCDF do not mention me in their latest ratings list. Perhaps they think so little of the English Open three-move championship, the English Open freestyle championship and the Welsh Open that no ratings points are awarded for winning these events. I would have expected my name, however insignificant, to have been mentioned somewhere in the WCDF ratings
even if it was at the very bottom of the 247 names mentioned.

None of the European players are on the list .

the list is not final if you look they are no titles next to players names as yet.why are you ducking out?

you should play to learn stuff.

Hi Kent,

You are right. None of the European players are even mentioned! Dr John Reade is looking into the matter now and says he will find out why this has happened.

My main reason for not wanting to play is that I do not think I am worthy of playing in such an event when there are other players from my country more deserving. Hopefully two players will come forward to join John Morgan.

Yes, the ratings make perfect sense don't they? Frank Bednall has a rating of 2004 and is in 45th place. Frank has never won a major tournament in his life and has only played in one such tournament in the past twenty years to my knowledge! In that particular tournament, the Welsh Open, Frank was placed 10th. I won the event. How Frank can have a rating of 2004 is beyond comprehension, something he would readily agree to. I do not say this to deride Frank in any way as he is a close personal friend of mine, and has been for over forty years. In major tournaments some twenty years ago, when Frank was a regular competitor, he never won a prize of any kind. He was happy enough to make up the numbers!

It is therefore odd to say the least that I have a rating of 1870 and am almost fifty places below Frank Bednall. I shall not lose any sleep over this but it makes one wonder just who calculates the ratings! I think I am a little better player than Frank!!!

Current English Open (three-move) Champion and will hold title until 2017. I was also twice previous winner 2009-2013. Current English (freestyle) Checker Champion and will hold title until 2018. Current Welsh Open Checker Champion and holder a record eight times. I will defend this title later this year (2015). Four times winner of the English Open Postal Championship and current holder of the title. I am now the holder of three separate English Open Championship titles, being the three-move event, the freestyle event and the postal event. I believe this is a unique distinction in British history.
