Without one of your players calling me corrupt or some other hateful name, can I say that having less working days in a National would provide more opportunities for working U.S. players.

I am not at the tournament this year, but I did get some news from some players. A total of 34 players are in attendance and 10 players make up the masters: Jim Morrison, Richard Beckwith, Jack Francis, Paul Bryan, Mark Sokolovsky, Clayton Nash, Richard Hallet, Joe Schwartz, John Webster, and Larry Keen. No Ron King or Lubabalo Kondlo there. The first day consisted of two rounds and every game was a draw in masters except two. Clayton beat Schwartz a game, and Hallet beat Clayton a game. So Hallet is in the lead with 5 and Schwartz currently has 3. Everyone else tied with 4 points.

Thank you JR. I stand corrected. 32 players, not 34. Also, I noticed you have Richard Beckwith's total score being 5, but his points only add up to 4. The masters division is truly up for grabs! It is also good to see that another young online player, Lorne Wells (1milliongames), has shown up to a tournament to compete. He should be one of the favorites to win majors.

Will the masters be a round robin?

I would like to see 3 move Nationals remain 5 or 6 days (whatever it has been in the past), but for GAYP Nationals, I like the format of 10 rounds in 4 days. In that case, I agree with Michael, in that if we are going to shorten it to 4 days, the days could be Thurs-Sun to allow 2 less working days for most US players. I know some players may have a long way to travel on Sunday after the tournament, but I think it would benefit more working players that way.

The masters is a full round robin with a repair the last round.

While playing in Southern States ty in the beginning of July, I donated one copy og Sixth to winner of lowest Division in National. I just checked standing table on NC site and it looks like my friend Grover Minor has all chances to be awarded.

Lorne got another 3 points in Majors and Masters played all boring draws in round #3

Rather, members in Chess know well in advance what to expect for a National.

I've always found this surprising about checkers.

I've been an active tournament director for chess in Hawai`i for a number of years, and there's never a question (worldwide) that: a clock will be used, score will be kept, and the format and timing of the tournament will be specified at the time the tournament announcement is published. (There is also never any computer adjudication, but that's a separate question.)

Different tournaments have different formats and time controls, but the ideas are well understood by players and directors alike. A state championship isn't ever going to be as fast as G60/d5 (all moves in 60 minutes with a 5 second time delay), for instance. Players expect at least G90/d5 and generally G120/d5. A blitz tournament is always G05/d0 and no one would expect anything else.

So I agree that checkers would be best served by consistency and clarity of expectation. Checkers is in no way inferior to chess--- we've all had that discussion countless times--- and checkers demands and merits the same high-level approach.

Just checked again NC site.

In Master Division Clayton Nash won both games against John Webster and is leading with 12 points after 5 rounds, Richard Hallett and Jack Francis have 11 points. In Major Division Canadian young star Lorne Wells, "1milliongames", is far ahead of competitors and in Minor Division leader indeed is G. Minor !

Half way done, 2 more days to go.

Regarding, clocks, regulations, etc ... I won't be much surprise if after several years we start discuss seriously about changing rules of game and make it easy for ordinary, average player Current rules are a bit complicated for someone who just started and try to learn it!

In the 6th round the only bloody games happen between Richard Beckwith (who won both games) and John Webster.

Richard joined with Clayton Nash and they both are leading with 14 points, Jack Francis and Richard Hallett have 13 points.

It seems the game which John Webster lost to Jack Francis in the 4th round had a big psychological impact on him. Jim Morrison and Larry Keen who definitely are favorites in this event, still have all draws after 6 rounds. I am glad to see that my friends Mark Sokolovsky and Paul Bryan are doing well.

Intrigue is growing.

In Major division Lorne raised a gap between him and competitors and in Minor Division my friend Grover Minor is fighting hard to get my book and keeps a good lead.

After 8 rounds Richard Beckwith leads with 19 points in Master Division and Richard Hallett and Clayton Nash are runners up with 18 points. In Major Division Lorne Wells from Canada collected 28 points (WOW) while Weaver Alex, NJ keeps the 2nd place with 21 points. In Minor Division everything is still in clouds where Grover Minor, Greensboro, NC, leads with 23 points and runner John Gibson from Alabama - 22 points.

Word just in, GM Richard Beckwith wins masters. Jack Francis, Richard Hallet, and Clayton Nash tied for second, but Francis edged them out in honor points. Nash and Hallet tied with honor points. Congratulations to Rich and the runners up! Also congrats to Lorne who dominated the majors and has officially earned his spot in the master division. Minors I have not heard about yet. Lastly, I congratulate Clayton Nash on an outstanding finish, achieving one of the grandmaster norms by finishing top 3!
